Forums - General Discussion - So is a plague of laziness responsible for the unemployment numbers?

Check this article out:

Anyone want to argue there are so many unemployed people, because they are lazy and aren't trying hard enough to find work?  The article is going into how unemployment is remaining at historically high levels, even as the economy is supposed to be out of the recession now.

No, I dont think so. Despite coming out of the recession and having everything looking on the up for the company I work for,  most of their hiring is overseas currently.  I know its only one company but it is a pretty big company.

So many people are unemployed because the people who hold the power, want it that way. It's a systematic problem and it's been that way for a long time.

Im sure that is true for some people but I highly doubt thats a majority. Its rather disgusting someone would even imply that.

I spent 4-5 months trying to find a job this year.  Much of that time I simply felt loss and confused about where to look for work.  When you're sitting at home at a loss as to where to apply next, I suppose that can be seen as laziness to those on the outside. I know my mom made quite a few comments to that effect over that time period.

During that period, most of the places that were "hiring" and involved a field I could do well in weren't actually hiring.  They had open staff positions, but they weren't actively looking for new employees.  If a current employee could recommend someone to fill in a position, they'd look into it, but all applications were completely ignored.

I'm finding this to be the case everywhere these days.  Every job I've ever had (going on six) was made available through someone I knew, and at the one job in which I was somewhat involved in the hiring process, we mostly took in people familiar to other employees, since we had problems with the employees we hired through the traditional apply/interview method - even those that seemed like amazing people when we initially met them.

So now I'm in a temp position doing stock, a job I landed solely because two of my sisters were former employees at the same location.  Between the other two people hired for the holidays, one was related to a current employee, and the other was a former employee.  And we'll all be let go come December.

The job market sucks right now, even for the low end, minimum wage crap.  And I can only imagine it being worse elsewhere.  New Orleans was in a bit of an economic bubble during the early days of the recession, due to storm recovery providing local economic growth.

I really don't think that is the case. Some people are getting more money on unemployment. Better off sticking with that then getting a low end joke of a job, That only works you 15-20 a week tops and then pays you minimum wage. you can't servive off of minimum wage and 40 hours a week, let alone half of that and then the company stiffing you for hours some weeks only getting 5-10.

How about they get some good jobs hiring or just pay people better or at bare minimum which they are not even doing, give them the hours to servive. 35 hours atleast. If you got college kids that only want so many hours, there you go.  What a f'ing joke.  I know people that put out resume's, applications daily. Doesn't seem that there is just so many jobs that they don't know which one to choice. actually they can't find a job. Yea part time wal-mart is great but it does not pay the bills.

The job market is still f'ed no matter who they want to blame.

I'm unemployed right now, but I'm Canadian. Its not laziness its the fact that nobody will hire me. I hit every ad I could find on CraigsList. I applied at every game and video store, I even applied at McDonalds. Nobody will hire me. What I don't get is I have alot of work experiance had a job since I was sixteen. But nope they don't care.

Heck I applied at FutureShop and BestBuy, I used to write movie reviews and game reviews for our cities second biggest paper. I had references galore, but nope nobody would hire me. I handed out about 200 resumes everywhere and no job.

Now am I still looking? Well holiday hiring is over so I am lazy right now. But come hiring season again or the next time I see an ad in a store window, Newspaper or perhaps craigslist I'll be out handing out more resumes. Heck I couldn't afford to renew my Security Liscence so thats one less job I can apply for!

Yes Richard, it is obviously laziness because people who wish to become cogs in the great economic machine are surplus to requirements!

My suggestion for anyone who is struggling to find work that you differentiate your C.V. Essentially its like dating a hot chick you have to make yours stand out. One of the best options is to physically modify your CV to stand out. For instance you could have your CV in a clear file or colour the CV in a different colour other than white, anything you can think of really. It won't work and annoy employers if everyone does this, however it shouldn't hurt if one or two people do it.

Tease.

How high was the unemployed number before the crisis?  3-4%?

Now it is at 9,8%  So a bunch of people just got lazy?

Just because the economy or an individual company is doing better doesn't mean the average worker is doing better.  With advances in technology, workers are getting more and more productive, so there are less of them that are needed, and thats not to mention that they have to compete with cheap labor elsewhere.

Lots of companies find ways to increase profits by downsizing, its always been that way.  With the recession, many companies have been forced to downsize to efficient levels and have little reason to rehire.
