Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Kinect beats Apple, becomes fastest selling device in gadget history!

didnt the Move sell like 4.1m in its first two months? Like apples record of 2m in two months.

The iPad is set to become the fastest selling consumer electronics product in history, with initial sales running at three times that of the current record holder: the DVD player.

“The iPad did not seem destined to be a runaway product success straight out of the box,” retail analyst Colin McGranahan of Bernstein Research wrote in an investors’ note. “By any account, the iPad is a runaway success of unprecedented proportion.”

At the current rate, the iPad will become the 4th biggest consumer electronics category by the end of next year, with estimated sales of more than $9 billion in the U.S. It will be bigger than game hardware and cell phones, trailing only TVs, smartphones and notebook PCs — the current three biggest categories. But these are product categories — and there’s only one iPad.

Apple sold three million units in the first 80 days after the iPad’s April release. Apple is currently selling about 4.5 million units per quarter, Bernstein Research estimates. By comparison, the previous fastest-selling CE device that wasn’t a phone — the DVD player – sold 350,000 units.

Bernstein notes that the iPad is not only cannibalizing sales of netbooks and notebooks, it may also be hurting sales of TVs and digital cameras.

....

Since there already is a category for Kinect, this logic fails?

Apple likes to claim things.

For the record, according to vgchartz, the wii sold 3.7Millions in its first 2 monthes.

Usually, when apple claims something, you just make a little research and BOOOOOM!! it's wrong. Or right under some circonstances, or their data comes from unknow sources.

They will know Helgan belongs to Helghasts

C & P sucks with quoting, so I'll just repaste it. So then the question is, do people buy the Balance Board and get a free Wii Fit? In this regard I wonder whether it would be the gadget that sold well, or the game . . . eh, I'd base it off how the device is marketed myself.

It is debatable, though I really don't think so. A device comes with a game. The device can also play other games. They both fit into that category. So if Kinect is being compared to iPad, Wii Fit should be too as it's in the same category.

Hm, not quite sure. Alternatively a game could come with a device to play the game; thus it's a peripheral created for a single purpose. Whether it remains a peripheral made for a single reason changes or not may not change it's original purpose, that of being a part of a game, albeit something you can physically manipulate outside of the game and use with other games. The balance board came with Wii Fit so play the game, I'm not sure you can say that a Wii came with Wii Sports so you can almost exclusively play Wii Sports.

If a device that comes with a game can also be used for other games could be in the same grouping, it should put in the same group as video game consoles.

Well, you can play games other than KA on Kinect. You can play games other than WF on Balance Board. Since you can also play games other than WS and WSR on the Wii, I guess they're all video game consoles?

Honestly, while it's kinda obvious that the Balance Board was made for Wii Fit, it could be argued that Kinect was made for Kinect Adventures and this, whilst completely ridiculous, can't really be argued against.

The fact the Wii sold 6,836,365 units last December doesn't kind off throw away this 25 day record?

If you can compare the sales between a camera and a Tablet, I'm sure that comparing to a console isn't that far fetched.

This iPAD record, just to start with, is laughable. It could be the fastest selling tablet, but definitely not the fastest selling electronic... I repeat: The Wii sold almost 7 million units. More than double of that.

Exactly. This is why I don't classify either as gadgets.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

I wonder how much they spent on advertising. Apple and Microsoft.  I would love to know how directly the amount correlates with sales.  They spent a lot.

I wonder what Malstrom has to say about this?

I actually agree with you there, :P. Was just saying that if Kinect is classified as one, the Balance Board should be too.

Whether it's actually a good comparison or if this record actually belongs to Kinect is debatable, but it's doing impressive numbers none the less.

Now show me some games I actually want!
