I'm just busting your chops a little, please don't take offense.

I think that people often use the argument that $500 million is magnitudes more than Sony spent and yet Sony has never said how much they have/will spend.  All they have said (to my knowledge) is that they wouldn't outspend Microsoft.  Well, that could be $475 million...

For anecdotal evidence, I'll be perfectly honest, all I reallly watch on TV is sports (football and basketball right now) and I've maybe seen 1.5 kinect commercials to move commercials.  More than Move?  Sure.  SIGNIFICANTLY more?  No.

But I don't want to de-rail the thread anymore, and I'm really not trying to insult you, just giving a little food for thought.

As always that's an example that means nothing. That may sound stupid but you may have missed alot of Kinect's ad. (no way Move have more ads than Kinect). And you're forgetting others way of promoting a product, where Kinect >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Move. Be reasonable please, 500M $ compared to few M are not comparable.

HAHA, you are making a couple of serious flaws in your argument, are you sure you want to continue?

Allow me to enumerate:

  1. I agree anecdotal evidence is relatively worthless.  So where's your proof that your viewing experience (ahem...which is ALSO anecdotal) is more accurate then mine?  Links please.
  2. Where do you get a few million from?  Link me where you have Move's advertising budget please.

I'm not even arguing that Move has sold poorly, nor am I stating that Kinect has sold incredibly well.  I'm only stating that the "advertising argument" that is thrown around here like gospel is NOT to my knowledge verifiable.

SO, let me ask you a direct question then, you have no idea how much Sony spent on Move advertising, do you?

Prove me wrong, show me hard numbers and a link to prove it and I'll concede, no problem.

I think this is what all those who doubted the success of Kinect were missing. This whole new way to play is engaging and easy to understand. There is nothing like it. Much like the Wii did when it first released, the Kinect does sell itself. Now the question is if it will have the same long term impact on Xbox 360/Kinect sales as the Wii had.

To be fair, I don't think many doubted the initial success of Kinect.  Heck, even most PS3 fans would tell you it was definitely going to outsell Move this holiday season.  However, what is most important is what happens when the holiday season is oover and we see which has better legs.  I have a feeling that Move may fair a little better in this category.

Regardless, good numbers for both.

Hmm, motion control wars amongst hardcore gamers. Never thought I'd see the day :P

It would be exactly the same if the products released were swapped by each company... if you know what im gettin at.

"Consumer polling carried out over a sample of 100 PlayStation Move owners shows that the average number of controllers per Move setup is 1.55."

ROFL x) 100, not 1,000 or 5,000 no, only 100. Seems right to guess total userbase... right.

Actually believe it or not 100 for a polling sample is perfectly acceptable.

So, Sony says they SOLD 4,1 Move controllers and its suddendly SHIPPED for vgchartz

but microsoft says they SOLD 2,5 kinects and to vgcjhartz its SOLD too

funny stuff

vgchartz is becoming such a big joke more and more

Its not that big of a joke seeing as Sony said their numbers were shipped to retailers and Microsoft said their numbers were sold through to customers.

Sony won't be around for the PS5, MS will have them backrupt by then. Then SEGA will have it's chance to reclaim it's rightful place in the industry, yay

Above: Best Wii game since Brawl.

To be honest without knowing the rate at which that $500M is being spent you cannot easily say how prolific the advertising spend is. For all we know it could be 12 months as easily as it could be 3 months. Anyway even if it is the 2 months to Christmas it is still around what Nintendo spends. Since Microsoft is significantly more profitable they can advertise more, on the other hand they could have simply cut the price of the console and Kinect instead. It is a tradeoff, and all is fair in business so long as it is ethical.

Tease.

Congratulations - that was the biggest selfown of the week.

I am soooo sick of this 500m marketing budget excuse. People are using it, like it would be unfair or something. This is a business and don't hate on MS for doing something you wished Sony could and would do.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I honestly think that this was definitely expected, with Kinect being more innovative than Move. The buzz before release was also heavily weighted towards Kinect and a huge marketing budget would help too.

I'm really interested to see how both sell are in 2011...

But what I fear is that motion controls becoming the standard for gaming... I still want my traditional controller !!!

Kinect must have sold >600K on Black Friday Week. That means that 360 probably sold around 600K aswell since probably 75% of Kinect buyers are Consoles with Bundles.

Where are you getting these percentages from ? o_O

Wishful thinking...the PS brand is still very strong in Europe and is expanding to countries that MS or Nintendo haven't....
