Pachter is so smart I wish he was my dad.

If you don't write better people will misinterpret what you mean.

Remove the "my" and add an "e" to "dad."

That's about right.

My computer has auto-correct. He must be a Microsoft shill or that correction would have never happened.

Tease.

Given that Sony themselves will never know the true install base for Move and all estimates will be based primarily on trying to guess the average ration of Move controllers to an individual, I can only assume all threads related to shipped numbers (which the original piece seemed to be clearly referring to) will be suitably epic.

All I know is, if they've sold 4.1 to retailers then the basic sell through is either okay or shippments will soon collapse as there is no way retailers will keep taking stock if it isn't selling.  Most likely, based on the fact that despite some stores being stocked sky high others are definately running out it's selling well enough on an on-going basis worldwide although there are also clearly allocation issues at the store level - which are really the retailers fault as normally Sony will deliver to the retailer and the retailer will decide the split to the stores.

What we need now is a true, killer app with a high enough attach rate to shed some light on the potential install base.

Until then, it's all wild guesses all the way.

"Wild guesses" please .. you're getting more unreasonable by the day.

The PS3 has been down YoY for the last few months.

Hmm, you're right.  I must have been looking at a specific region.  And while it is down overall by about 10% since the Move launched, I still think its pretty darn good.  Especially considering the Slim launched last year with a $100 pricecut, which created a huge boost during the holidays.  We also have to wait for sales results for GT5/BF week, which actually might make PS3 even with or greater than the sales of '09 in the same period.

And there's always the chance of more adjustments after we get Sony quarterly numbers next year.

Hmm, if Move REALLY sold that many units in so short a time, that that clearly means that the device is selling primarilly to current PS3 owners (since PS3 sales have not significantly risen), which is exactly what I expected, but probably not what Sony wanted. Sony wants new gamers that would have otherwise bought a Wii, which I don't see happening. The best that will likely happen for Sony is, as Malstrom said, keeping the CURRENT PS3 owners on that console and dissuading them from going out and buying a Wii.

If Sony really wants NEW consumers on their consoles, they need the device AND the console much cheaper, not to mention far more games that these new consumers would like. Right now the price is far too high to jump on board, and there are far too few games in general on the device, let alone games that the expanded audience would want.

So Malstrom laughs at the notion of Wii owners running out to buy a HD console (which has a bigger combined installed base after all, making the HD console market bigger) but think there's a chance that PS3 owners will want to run out and buy a Wii? That guy...

The main reason why Move will fail to bring in the Wii customers is that the PS3 as a machine and concept at it's core does not appeal to the same demographics and gamers and vice versa.

It's like talking to a brick wall.

He's just not taking Pachter's word and that's basically all you have provided is a Pachter guess, which for better or for worse doesn't really count for squat around here.

Yet his numbers are constantly used by VGC to validate their estimated numbers..

Therefore, there is a problem with VGChratz's numbers by that logic.

Not by defauly no.. but this newly found love for all Pachter estimates is lame. A estimation site that refrence their numbers with others who estimate. As if VGC didnt have it hard enough with the random public thinking their numbers are all made up, now they validate their stats with estimated numbers, and from a guy thats generally known for random quotes and misjudgements.

Therefore, there is a problem with VGChratz's numbers by that logic.

You were probably thinking of Europe.  I think the Move and now GT5 has been much better received there than the Americas (which is probably what is holding it down YoY worldwide).

I am looking forward to the BF week results as well!!

so if you need 4 controllers total, then its slightly attach rate could be 1 mil unique purchasers, with multiple units? Or more common, 2 units per ps3, so 2 mil unique customers?

Just trying to feel out the consumer to sales ratio, to see how big the potential future Move software is.

ioi said before that ratio is more like 1.6 Move per user.

So... 4m shipped... 3.5m sold... ~ 2.2m user base.

Gotcha. How do you buy a 6th of a controller though? Is that like the Move minus the clown nose? Then doesn't that make it a Wii remote? Sony people are buying wii remotes?  =P

First of all, 0.6 is not a 6th. Secondly, do you get it that this is an average? Let's make a simple example:
Let's say, PS Move sales: 1.6m, unique users: 1.0m -----------> 1.6 Move per user. Come on, it's simple...

Btw, this thread is hilarious, some funny and ridiculous posts in here.

OT: Great sales! Probably did more than some people expected. And yes, it's shipped, not sold, but Sony isn't claiming that these are sold, so...

The first part of your post didn't sound like sarcasm, dude...

Then I decree a BAKE SALE! Indeed, a bake sale to raise money to fix your broken saracam detector! You will have a Merry Christmas yet, Tiny Tim!  :P
