I dunno, I think those MHP3 shipments are fine.  Within a month Capcom will ship more copies of MHP3 than they did total for (full price) MHP2G, and they're expecting to ship another million on top of that by the end of March.  That's a HUGE increase for the series already, I think some people's expectations are getting bit unrealistic if they expect better than that.

Well, if we drive ourselves from the numbers, actually MHP3rd has the highest preorders ever for Japan by now, so they're not so unrealistic.

Highest preorders according to who exactly?  I haven't seen word from any of the retail blogs making that claim yet?

What's VGC say on preorders?  Actually, does VGC track JP preorders?

These aren't sales, they're (projected) shipments.  Azalyn isn't from the future. :P

Well, it is according to COMG, and also TheSource said it was at 1.6m 10 days away from release, while Pokemon Black/White was at 1.7m the release day.

I think it can do 500k-ish in Japan, and maybe 500k-ish in the west.  1m should be enough to turn a decent profit, the game is outsourced anyway (so it's cheaper than internal R&D efforts like Crisis Core, Agito, BBS, etc) and doesn't exactly have a huge team (Hexadrive's a pretty small dev).

3rd b'day was outsourced? I thought it was internally made by the Agito team?

Projected based on retail checks and historical data.  The 11/25 releases are probably confirmed though.

 

Here's a link to the blog.  They have 1st day sales data for 11/25 stuff too (Mario Sports 30k bomba!).
