Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Help me justify the purchase of an Xbox 360

Since the release of Kinect, I've been dying to play Dance Central. I never got into DDR that much because to me that's not dancing at all but Dance Central looks like the real deal and from the reviews and comments I've heard it seems to be the dancing game I've been waiting for.

Now here's the problem, I don't have an Xbox so it would cost me 299.99 (or 399.99 for the 250Go version) + 49.99 for the game. That's a bit steep for only one game. Solution? "Buy other 360 games you like dummy!" you might say... but since I've never followed Xbox 360 exclusives that much (because I frankly never thought I'd ever buy one) I'm pretty much clueless as to what games I could buy to go with my new console. That's where the VGChartz community comes in!

I need some recommendations for Xbox 360 games I might like. Please make note that I have no interest in FPSs so no Halo. The genres I do like are fighters, RPGs, platformers, action.

Also, I'd like to know if I should put in the extra 100 bucks for the 250 Go version?

Thank you all!

Lost Odyssey is the best Final Fantasy since FFX, and is probably worth the price of admission all by itself.

But I'd also highly recommend Dead Rising, Earth Defense Force 2017, The Last Remnant, and Blue Dragon. All of which can probably be picked up for a song!

Xbox Live Arcade is where its at.

100 bucks spent on XBL will give you 100's of fun hours of gameplay. Especially if you are jsut buying the system now for the first time...you got lots of great titles to catch up on. Braid, Castle Crashers, Geometry Wars 2, Splosion Man, Shadow Complex, Super Meat Boy, Limbo...list can go on and on

Well I believe it's Future Shop that has the 360 Slim 250 GB for $250 right now in Canada. It comes with Alan Wake, Forza 3, Assassin's Creed 2 and Brutal Legend for that price. AC2 is my second fav. game this gen, Brutal Legend is genius that you'll absolutely love if you like rock music and Forza 3 and Alan Wake are two of the most highly regarded 360 games.

Apparently they changed AC2 with Tiger Woods Golf...

EDIT 2: Best Buy is doing this with AC2 now

Games to get -

1. Alan Wake was tons of fun, I played and beat it twice in a row - have never done that with any other game

2. FPS - Halo, GOW . . . Xbox is the FPS console, so you can't go wrong here

3. Halo Wars was pretty fun and something to consider if you like RTS games

4. Crackdown - Tons of fun.  Not as good as GTA games, but a good sandbox game that is fun to blow things up in

5. Mass Effect series . . . not my cup of tea, but apparently they're some of the "best games ever" - according to game informer

6. Arcade games (d/l the demo, see what you think, these may not be xbox exclusive):

  1. Castle Crashers . . . tons of fun.  Tons

  2. N

  3. Braid

  4. Limbo

  5. Worms 2 Armegeddon - if you have friends over who played that game with you in college

  6. Battlefield 1943 - this is a must have.  if there were more Achievement pts available I'd still play this game

As for a 250GB console - do you care about noise?  Do you care about console longevity?  Do you plan on buying a lot of Arcade games?  If the answers to those questions are yes, then buy the 250GB console.  OR just plan on upgrading the HDD at a later time, you can always add it later.

Installing games to the HDD does the following:  Game runs from the HDD, therefore there is no CD spinning during game play - Quieter, and your ODD will last longer.

You of course have the option of getting memory sticks to give you more space available . . but I don't think you can run games from those, or save and store Arcade games from them.

My suggestion:  get the 4gb 360 and make sure you get the yr subscription to Xbox Live . . . see how you like it, save up . . . upgrade to 250GB HDD at a later time.

Walmart has a black-friday door buster 4gb model that comes with Mass Effect 2 and Modern warfare 2 for $199 . . . pretty darned good deal if you live in the US.

Thanks! If I go for the 250Gb version this is the better deal because at 249.99 (plus) 149.99 (Kinect) (plus) 49.99 it's the same price as the 250Gb Kinect bundle and the game (399.99 (plus) 49.99).

It's  a shame I'm only interested in Alan Wake from all the free games (I already have AC2 on PS3)

I think badgenome mentioned the complete list of all things you may like that are exclusive to the 360 (considering you have a gaming PC) if not, you should probably look into Mass Effect 2 (although I understand is coming for PS3, but if you are buying a 360 get it for 360 I'd say, and "justify" some more that purchase). Not much else in those genres really...maybe Splinter Cell Conviction? Honestly, I think a $400 investment is not worth it just for Dance Central and the non-shooter exclusives the X360 has to offer. But who knows, maybe you'll like Gears of War...

DoA2 for the Xbox is a really good fighter. It is an enhanced version of the PS2 one. Mostly enhanced in pervy ways, but also a much needed change to the counter system. DoA3 and 4 kind of suck so I wouldn't really bother with them.

Culdcept Saga is an amazing mix of Magic the Gathering and Monopoly. Lost Odyssey is a very fun RPG, and the original Dead Rising is a blast. How it compares to the sequel I dunno.

Splosion Man is a kind of fun platformer, although the co-op levels don't really work that well.

Castle Crashers is an amazing beat-em up. I know it is coming to the PS3 at some point, and might already be out. If so then pick it up pronto. Oh also, the XBLA has the old school Turtles arcade game on the cheap. Much, much better than the Turtles in Time re-make if you ask me.

  • Lost Odyssey is the best console JRPG this gen for me. Very good combat system. Especially the dream stories are among the best writing in a game ever.
  • Mass Effect is an absolute masterpiece. Great story, good mix between action and RPG and a very interesting world.
  • I really liked Alan Wake. Great atmosphere and bizarre story.

1. Lost Odyssey

2. Mass Effect 1&2

3. Kinect ( I have Kinect Adventures atm. Still waiting for bargains on other Kinect games)
