You seem to forget one single thing NES didnt have: Competition. No other console or game came even close to the fame NES and Mario got. While NES sold over 60 million units, the competitor console probably didnt even make it pass 1 million. So what else are were customers gonna buy except a NES game? If EVERYBODY in 5th gen era bought PS1 and only PS1, you could be damn sure that Crash Bandicoot could easly outsell SMB3...

The NES had competition, it's just not remembered because it wiped the floor with it. Home computers were declared to be the future of gaming, because after all they could not only play games, but do so much more. NES and Mario didn't become so popular, because there were no alternatives (there were plenty, from home computers to other consoles). They became so popular, because they were simply that much better than the rest.

Btw, the PS1 sold 40m units more than the NES, so it's not like there weren't enough gamers around to make Crash Bandicoot outsell Super Mario Bros. 3. It still didn't happen.

Ok how much hardware units did the ''competition'' sell? NES wiped the floor with it, you said so yourself. Competition is what SEGA was to Nintendo in SNES era. Or what Microsoft is to Sony today. Yes, there were other hardware units that could play games, i never denied that, but they all went almost unnoticable and forgotten.

And its not about the userbase, its about the competition. If there were no other noticable consoles besides PS1 in 5th gen, than Crash could have easly outsold SMB3.

But i dont even know why you brought this up, because this is a gaming discussion, not a sales discussion. Im talking about the game itself, and how bad it is, not about how popular it is.

Sure, it won't. But nevertheless it says a lot about the quality of Super Mario Bros. 3 if it can still outsell the vast majority of brandnew games 20 years after its original release.

A LOT OF STUFF changed since NES generation, you should know that.

Precisely. Technology advanced, development team sizes and budgets multiplied by many times and the video games market as a whole grew by a lot. Yet the majority of new games still can't beat Super Mario Bros. 3 with all those advantages going for them. And I am not refering to phenomenon that Super Mario Bros. 3 was back then when it got originally released, I am talking about the here and now where the platformer isn't even a new game.

Not many games stand the test of time and titles that get hailed for their fantastic graphics get laughed at for being primitive a decade later. Nobody in their right mind would laugh at Super Mario Bros. 3. Quite the opposite is the case, as people are still stunned that the simple NES could offer such a polished and rich gaming experience.

Ps1 outsold NES by alot and Crash did not outsell SMB3.....

Maybe because PS1 had N64 and SEGA Saturn on its ass and NES had no worthwile competitive consoles?

You are comparing games with a 2 gen difference. With what is around 40 million more consoles sold it should have sold more but it takes all 3 Crash games to pass Super Mario Bros 3. Also Mairo64 sold 11million units with the Ps1 as market leader. Highest Crash game sold7.57million which is Crash Bandicoot 2 This is using your logic which is flawed. How many people do think needed to buy a PS1 for Crash to have sold more? THe N64 sold 32million it was nowhere near PS1. Even bigger gap between Sega Saturn and PS1.

Where you alive during the NES era? This is where one of the big differences in opinion comes from. I was alive I was a kid I was there The day Super Mario Bros 3 came out. It was my familys first preordered game actually. Anyways the point is if you grew up with Crash as I did Mario it is almost a given which you enjoyed more. To be honest I enjoyed Crash 1,2,3, but if i had to choose one game to have ever played it will still be Super Mario Bros 3 without even needing a second to think about it.

Can you people read? Are you blind`?  its not about the fucking userbase, but a choice and competition. If PS1 was the only worthwile console during its era, like NES was, do you honestly think Crash wouldnt outsell SMB3???  Platformer fans who would normally buy MArio or Sonic game would have no choice but to buy Crash Bandicoot, because it would be THE ONLY good platformer available at the time and given the PS1's userbase, it could easly outsell SMB3.

Anyway, im not gonna let you guys suck me into this discussion becaause im not herer to discuss the game's sales and popularutiy, but rather how it sucks, so i wont be replaying to your posts, unless they are related to the game itself.

Yes I believe it still wouldnt. Being a platforming fan does not mean they would have bought it. I will use Mario as an example  why .Mario VS Mario. People love Mario we already all know that but on its on console Mario can not stack up to Mario. New Super Mario bros has outsold both Galaxys on the Wii. Same userbase same Nintendo fans etc etc etc. Why is this a point you might ask? Because Crash is not Mario and 3D Mario is not 2DMario.  Just because someone is a huge fan of a certain Genre does not mean they will like some others take on it. There are plenty of people who love Mario but can not stand 3D Mario. Same as there are people who love Crash but cant stand Mario or vice versa. People will just walk away from it. This has been proven.

I know I shouldn´t reply to your thread anymore, but I just had to say this.

in regards to mario vs crash: Mario was here before crash (and many other platformers) and he will remain here after crash and others die, that has to tell you how well the franchice is perceived.

Also, as Rol said, the fact that there are people out there today who are willing to pay for mario 3 (whether in vc or in the mario collection)  when they could even play it free on their computers shows how great people think this game is.

The discussion never was about how the game sucks, because it doesn't. It always was about you sucking at the game.

lol burn!

right on the money

Wait wait wait

Are you suggesting that Crash could outsell SMB3 because Crash is the better game?

This game is shit, plain and simple.

Oh, let's all get the warp whistle and warp to "big world"! Too bad big world isn't fucking fun, like the rest of this game. The entire thing is designed to anger and frustrate you. Oh, you get Kuribo's shoe on one fucking level! Wow, pardon me while I make the universal motion for a handjob. Kuribo's shoe fucking sucked. What did it do, exactly? It let you JUMP ON THINGS, something you were able to do the entire fucking game. Oh, also you looked gay.

There are some interesting power-ups in the game, such as Tanookie Mario, Hammer Mario, and Frog Mario. But guess what? You can get them on like 2 levels total, and if you fuck up and get hit ONCE, you lose them, FOREVER. Wow, that's fun! I love games that demand I play perfectly or have no fun, because I'm a fucking jap who strives for absolute perfection in gaming otherwise I kill myself.

Mario 3 may have been interesting or fun at one time, but the game is a worthless piece of shit in today's day and age. It's horribly flawed and full of punch-in-the-dick moments, much more so than it has moments that are just fun to play.

Big world is fun along with the rest of the game. I beat this when I was 9 it cant be to frustrating.  Your just mad you didnt invent the shoe. Plus "gay" is not a look it is somones sexual orientation. It is also another word for happy. Which if that is what you  meant then yes it does seem to be a happy shoe.

Sorry the game doesnt hold your hand and let you keep your power ups when you get hit. Forever really doesnt work here because you can just hit Reset and get them again and if you get better you can keep them longer. Im not Asian myself and I had tons of fun with this. Still do actually.

Mario 3 is still the best game to have ever been made. You can make games look prettier but you can never compare to Mario 3 without getting some basics down (the biggest problem with most games today).

Im sorry you didnt enjoy it. But hey least you made a flame thread with a racist slur put in it out of it.
