Forums - Sales Discussion - Kinect VS Move SHIPPED Numbers? MS overshipping?

I'm still trying to get my hands on 2 more Move controllers, and have been 5 places so far only to find them sold out. Only 1 of those places (a gamestop) had Kinect sold out. Its just rousing my curiosity a bit as to how much MS has shipped vs sold and Sony shipped vs sold numbers. Something tells me the margin between Sony's shipped/sold numbers is MUCH smaller.

Well if that's the case why doesn't Sony have the balls to release their sold through to consumer numbers?  Why don't you go over to their blog and call them on it?  Tell them to tell us how many Move controllers sold in the first 10 days.

Because I'm a logical person who knows that will never happen. Hopefully they are more concerned about catching up with demand than they are with telling everyone how bad they are at doing it.

Is Sony undershipping Move keeping it in low supply, or is MS overshipping Kinect to make sure it stays in supply? I just through Kinect would be sold out considering it was less than 10 days from launch when I went looking for them

Companies does not overship. They dont ship more then what is order, never.

I spik engrish?

I understand that in order for a company like MS or Sony to ship, the retailer has to actually order them. But when Walmart orders 50 Kinect sensors and Sony ships them knowing Walmart will probably only need 20 for that day, they are overhshipping consumer demand regardless.

Undershipping on the other hand is possibly at the fault of the company. If walmart orders 50 more Move controllers and Sony can't keep up with demand, they are undershipping.

Nope.  You've just described the retailer over-ordering.

Overshipping is the supplier sending more than ordered - i.e. Walmart orders 50 and Sony send 60.  This can happen but normally if the supplier goes to far the retailer will complain and may insist on returning some or some other form of recompense for having to handle more inventory than they want.  A more formal way to overship is for the supplier - Sony - to contact Walmart and ask if they could send more - depending upon quantities the retailer will often agree.  So for example Walmart in total order 100,000 and Sony ask if they can ship 110,000.

If they send exactly what's ordered they've shipped accurately.  There would be no way Sony would know Walmart only need 20 when they order 50.  Walmart have very sophisticted demand forecasting and would only order what they believe demand to be - and unlike Sony - who would only see total orders from Walmart - Walmart themselves would have accurate inventory/sales information for each store/warehouse.

Obviously your description of undershipping is correct.

EDIT - also, OT there are thousands of stores stocking these products.  At any one time I can guarantee I could find a store with zero Kinects and lots of Move and another store with zero Move and lots of Kinects.  People need to stop trying to extrapolate too much from too small a data sample.  A couple of local stores only tells you about local demand/trends, nothing overall.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Calm down my friend.  Just because there is a demand for Move in one fashion or another doesn't mean you have to find some avenue of hate to point the finger.  SONY has released numbers, and I'm sure they will continue to release number at their time.  All companies to this when THEY want to.

Well doesn't logic tell you that they would want to show up the competition?

Technically Sony can't send more than Walmart orders. Walmart has to pay for the order. Its illegal to make them pay for more than they ordered.

That'd be like going through McDonald's drive-through and saying you want a Double Cheeseburger. When you get to the window they hand you 20 of them and ask you to pony up the cash. It doesn't work that way.

Is it possible that it happens? Sure. It just doesn't seem like a very likely scenario. I have a good friend who is an electronics manager at Walmart, and he says Sony can't fulfill orders right now. MS on the other hand has been contacting Walmart headquarters asking if they can take so many units... before Walmart even orders them. Isn't THAT overshipping?

Logic says they showed up but didn't bring enough for everyone. I guess the party was bigger than they originally intended.

I think a lot of people are frustrated that Sony released incomplete information so their numbers are not as informative as they could be. Specifically they have never given the breakdown of controller, starter pack, and navigator numbers leaving interpretation of the real market reception wide open. This does lend some credibility to to Legend11s opinion (if it was stated a little too emotionally) that it is confusing why Sony does not release the shipment breakdowns when the controllers appear to be selling so well. It appears that there is either something they do not want people (investors, developers, consumers?) to know or they are doing a poor job of marketing their success.

This confusion with Move number has appeared even worse now with Kinect sales because they are so simple to interpret and MS has given sell through numbers.

I honestly can't understand why this site in particular as well as SONY cannot report PS Eye sales in combination with bundle sales.  Yes, not everyone buys a PS Eye for Move, but it will give some better indication of unique users.  Of course there is the argument of a single household having more than one Eye and/or more than one Kinect.  But then again, how many people already have an Eye prior to the Move's release who bought a Move controller?  So even if SONY released more specific numbers, it can be potentially misconstruded to make Move look bad.  So as long as Move sale have been good for SONY, retailers, and consumers, let's not get our panties in a wad.  Unfortunately, some users on this site want numbers just to troll and discredit.  That's where the "emotionally" charged are usually coming from.

These Kinect sales make VGC-forums to go from one low to another.

I saw 3 Kinect-sensors, MS overshipping confirmed!!!111

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

This thread is useless till some numbers for actual consumer purchase are available.

We all know that Kinect already sold 1 million, how many of those are on consumers hands and how many are yet sitting in the shelves its what everyone wanna know by now.
