Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony cuts PSP Go's price twice in three weeks, will it save the platform?

I don't recall any other system ever getting two price cuts in three weeks but that's just what Sony has done in the UK (will the U.S. follow?)...  The first price cut must have done almost nothing for them to take this kind of measure.  That and giving away 10 free full games with the system must be unprecendented.

Sony cuts UK PSPgo price again News PSP News by Wesley Yin-Poole

Sony's slashed the price of the embattled PSPgo in the UK once again.

It's knocked £30 off the RRP of the digital-only handheld. Now, it'll set you back 129 pounds.

This latest cut follows last month's price cut, which knocked £65 off the £225 RRP.

Analysts described October's price cut as "too meagre and too late," to Eurogamer. "The UK price reduction is more dramatic, but had to be considering the recent MSRP which was too high in my opinion," M2 Research's Billy Pidgeon told Eurogamer.

"Now that 'sources' have revealed more details regarding PSP2, including a proposed fall 2011 date, it is very unlikely that these prices will clear shelves. PSP will see sharp declines this holiday into Q1 2011 without more aggressive price cuts."

The PSPgo, launched in the west last October, has been a commercial flop for Sony, although some rumours suggest it was an experiment ahead of the much-rumoured PSP2.

Lol... They should just give them away with a promotion or sumthing no one wants them Sony yeesh

SONY has cut there loses and want to clear all there PSPgo and i am sure PSP is out

i believe they have disconnected the pspgo and will soon the PSP for the PSP2/PSPhone

I believe they want to cash out on there loses and now they know that digital distribution isn't the way to go for handholds unless you are selling 1-5 dollar mini games(sony should get into)

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Sounds like a death rattle, to me.  I remember when the Dreamcast's price dropped by $100 (almost a week after I got mine).  It was the harbinger of death for the system.

Far from being saved.

Yeah sounds to me like Sony are cutting their losses and just getting rid of stock. It was an interesting experiment, but yeah didn't work. Although I think if Sony had offered some way to convert UMD games to digital it would have been a whole lot more successful. As it was its main appeal was to current non-PSP owners, but then the price scared people off, plus it came in at a time consumer support for the PSP was dying anyway.

Surely for PSP2 flash memory is cheap enough that Sony could ship games on SD cards or something similar. That way people still get the physical medium they want without the bulkiness and power draw of the UMD drives.

They are not trying to save the PSPGo, they are trying to clean the stock as fast as they can. I think a PSPhone/PSTablet/PSP2 is going to be announced early next year, after some of the biggest titles were released (like KH, God of War Ghost of Sparta and MHP3). Soon they will cut the price of PSP 3000 or expand he Black Friday deals to worldwide stores.

Too little... Too late.

Launched at too much of a high price. Left it too long to cut it.

ITS AN ERROR: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/11/15/second-pspgo-price-cut-listing-an-error/

Sorry, still £159.99

Sony has to come to grips with the fact that the portable that just might save their handheld sales is just not what the people want at the moment.
