Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why Do Bad Wii Games Get Reviewed So Quickly?

Is it just me, or do the games sites go out of their way sometimes to review really bad Wii games and get them posted ASAP while letting good games sit in limbo? Case in point, I have been waiting for a review of Black Ops for Wii for a few days now. PS360 has about 30-40 reviews already up, whereas the Wii version has 1. IGN and Gamespot have yet to post reviews for Black Ops for Wii, and yet IGN has reviews up today for Baby Sitting Mama (4.5/10)  and Hawx2 (4.0/10). Hawx2 was released on the same day as Black Ops. I also watch a show called Reviews on the Run, and they seem to spend 50% of their time reviewing really bad Wii games that don't even deserved to be mentioned, whereas really good games are not reviewed at all. Monster Hunter Tri has never been reviewed by these guys but during the same time period they DID review such gems as Zombie Panic in Wonderland (5/10), Attack of the Movies 3-D (1.8/10), and Lets Paint (0.0/10). I mean they all have departments/people dedicated to reviewing Wii games, right? Do they not WANT to review good games? Can anyone explain this to me?

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, always assume you have the upper hand.

You really need to put 100 hours minimum into Monster Hunter Tri to review it. Most reviewers these days aren't that strong

Most reviewers would shit their pants staring down Rathalos in all his horribleness. There i said it :)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

"We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read."

And I'm not just trying to be cute, look at people The Angry Video Game Nerd, Yahtzee, The Nostaglic Critic and half the people on his website thatguywiththeglasses.com. Negative Critiscm sells. Take this excrept from an IGN review of Imagine: Party Babyz.

"I'll be honest, I really wanted to hate Party Babyz. We as gamers have, after all, been trained for years to be suspicious of mini-game compilations, to ignore products with babies on the cover and to absolutely abhor games using the letter "z" in their titles as an indication of a plural. I had all these great jokes lined up, a whole list of witty and sarcastic remarks that would have forced the developers into early retirement and ultimately secured my reputation as one the most scathing and hilarious freelancers the IGN readership had ever seen. That list now sits crumpled at the bottom of my trash bin.

Why, you ask? Because, despite one of the worst examples of botched box art marketing I've ever witnessed, Imagine: Party Babyz is one of the finest mini-game compilations to ever grace Nintendo's home console."

He fully admits he wanted to review this game for the sole purpose of tearing into for laughs. (He actually didn't because it turned out to be an okay game.)

Basically it's often easier, more fun, and more profitable to be a sarcastic casusitc critic, then say a balanced objective reviewer. Another IGN review for some terrible Kart racing game on the Wii had the reviewer (Think it was Mark Bozon) say that he had won the right to review the game in a coin toss and was happy to do it. No budget shovelware is like dessert for reviewers. Tastes great, but probably very unheathy. =P

Oh yeah, now that you mention it, I have heard that for the last 4 years now. It should happen any moment, right? It sometimes feels like certain reviewers are upset that the Wii did not fail as they predicted, so they will just HIGHLIGHT every bad Wii game as evidence that it SHOULD have failed.

I've never understood how some of these sites seem to review every piece of shovelware, but then just copy/paste their review for every platform on multiplat games.  Even when there might be a large difference like PC and Wii versions.

Ah, any day now, any day now. Now that PS3 and 360 both have their own motion control schemes, Nintendo's definitely going down, and hard. Just you wait!

that pisses me off too.

i go to compare versions of pc and 360 and the only info i get is that they loved how their trophy collection is now bigger (PS3 is trophies)

Besides the reasons explained above there is also a simple one. Reviewing a good game takes time, but to review a bad game you can take just a few minutes of your time, you don't even have to finish the game if the controls are broken, the graphics are bad and has low production values the game will not change all of a sudden. So its easier, faster, cheaper and you can get a good amount of traffic for your site, its a win-win situation for them, you can't really blame them, it makes perfect sense.

What you can't forgive its that they neglet to review the good games even if its a little later.
