Forums - PC Discussion - Retailers threaten to ban Steam games!

Good. Everytime I look at a game at a retail outlet, I have to constantly look in the back to see if it's Steam integrated or not.

And why don't you just buy your games on Steam? the majority of the time they are easier to get installed, have better purchase deals, and amazing sales.

Considering less and less retailers are stocking even major PC titles... who cares?

This also confused me a bit. Considerring physical retailers PC shelf space has dwindled in recent years, how much of a threat is it to publishers? In the future, digital download sales will exclipse conventional retailers.

Are publishers really going to care if a physical retailer stops stocking a game? It just means people are more likely to look online where publishers get a greater profit from each download anyway.

It seems to be more of any empty threat than anything else.

Why does it matter? Steam is a lot more convenient these days.

At this point Steam can't be stopped. Good luck to the retailers but that's not even gonna be close to enough help.

Well retailers should see it this way....

if we didn't want they physical copy they sell... we'd probably be downloading it from steam before actually bothering with them :p

So tell if I have this right:

Retailers which can't sell many PC games in the first place are mad publishers are using something that sells most of their games and the retailers that sell almost no games are threatening to stop selling almost no games?

Yeah...

The retailers have seen how profitable Steam is and want to start their own DD services. Unfortunately, they're light years behind, so rather than actually make their services compelling to publishers and customers, they'd rather try and hobble the market leader. I'm all for competition but at the moment, every other DD service, bar GOG, just doesn't offer anything that Steam doesn't do much, much better, which is why I rarely buy from them.

Exactly.

So, they are gonna make even less money than they already do. If I were them I would try to at least get some residuals from people who don't do the online thing, but whatever.

Me personally, I almost never buy PC games from retailers anymore. What's the point? The benefits from steam or any other digital distribution channel trumps going to some crap store.

Heck, the only retailer I use these days? Amazon.

The point of the non-Steam sellers is that Steam could grow out to be the iTunes of gaming, where Valve dictates the market, like Apple is doing with songs and apps. Now maybe you can trust them not abusing that power, but I surely prefer actual competition preventing one party deciding which games you can play.

Not saying I blame Valve for that, they grew because they're offering the best deal, but it seems other (online) retailers had enough and will stop at nothing to lose all their market share.
