Forums - General Discussion - STAR WARS TOURNAMENT: Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back. Rate it!

Welcome to the VGChartz STAR WARS Tournament!

Feel free to discuss the episode after rating. DO NOT EDIT YOUR SCORE.

This is a competition that Darthdevidem01 and I are hosting in celebration of what many (with good taste) feel is the greatest fim franchise in history! There will be a thread on every other day, beginning with The Phantom Menace, and going right up to Return of the Jedi... and perhaps beyond.

The average rating for each episode will be based on the scores given by users in these threads, and it will be fun to see which episode is most popular here on VGChartz.

Rankings So Far:

1) Episode IV: A New Hope

2) Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

3) Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

4) Episode 2: Attack of the Clones

STAR WARS EPISODE V : The Empire Strikes Back.

____________________________________

Synopsis (Warning: May Contain Spoilers):

Though the Rebellion has destroyed the Death Star, all is not well. They have been driven into hiding on the bleak, frozen world of Hoth. A probe sent by Darth Vader to find Luke Skywalker lands on Hoth and several other planets, and Luke is knocked unconscious by a Wampa when trying to investigate it. On waking, he has a vision of Obi-Wan telling him to go to Planet Dagobah, to be trained by legendary Jedi master Yoda. Luke is rescued by Han Solo, but the probe finds the Rebel base, and an enormous battalion of Imperial troops, including several AT-AT (All-Terrain Armoured Transports) proves too much for the Rebellion to handle, despite the death of Imperial General Veers. Luke Skywalker escapes, and travels to Dagobah. Before his training is over, however, he travels to Cloud City on Planet Bespin, due to a vision in which Han and Leia are in grave danger. Han and Leia, meanwhile, are chased through an asteroid field by bounty hunters and eventually do travel to Cloud City, where they are betrayed by Lando Calrissian, an old friend of Han. On Vader's orders, they are to be used as bait for Luke Skywalker. Han is frozen in carbonite and sent to Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine, and Chewbacca and Lando travel to rescue him. Meanwhile, Luke confronts and battles Darth Vader, and when he is cornered, the Sith Lord reveals that he did not kill Luke's father, but that he is his father. Luke manages to escape with the Millenium Falcon, and is taken to a medical frigate where, like his father, he is fitted with an artificial hand.

Box Office Gross

American Gross- $290 Million (Adjusted for Inflation: $770 Million)

Worldwide Gross - $538 Million (Adjusted for Inflation: $1.4 Billion)

Fun Fact -- The Empire Strikes Back had a relatively paltry opening weekend gross of $10.84 Million. This is because the film was initially only released on 70mm film, which could only be played in a select few theatres - 35mm was industry standard.

Critical Reception:

Rotten Tomatoes97% Positive Reviews (Fresh), Average Rating 8.6/10 (Highest Rated Star Wars Film)

Metacritic: 78% Review Average (Generally Favourable)....Remember that Metacritic for movies is different to that of games. Very few movies get over 80%, which would be defined as Universal Acclaim.

10/10

Maybe I'll rant why it's 10/10 later but I doubt many people will say I'm way off.

All in all, just plain awesome move and best of the six.

9.5/10 excellent sequel

10/10

This is my favourite Star Wars movie. I do adore both Episode 4 and Episode 6, but this is comfortably above both. One of the greatest films ever created.

Good:

- Hoth is beautifully designed and rendered. As is everything else. And all using effects from the 1970s.

Beautiful musical score.

- The Imperial attack is just...incredible. It makes that clone-droid battle in Attack of the Clones, a fantastic scene in its own right, look like two babies fighting over a lollipop.

- Mark Hamill acts far better in this than in A New Hope.

- The navigation of the asteroid field.

- Han and Leia. That's how you do sexual tension, creepy-modern-day-George-Lucas. Not paedophilic relationships between senators and annoying fourteen year old boys.

- Yoda.

- Vader, in significant quantities.

No, Luke. I am your father.

Bad:

- Nothing comes to mind.
