Forums - Gaming Discussion - Digital Foundry: Face-Off: Call of Duty: Black Ops (360 vs. PS3)

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-call-of-duty-black-ops-faceoff

The COD games in the past have hovered around the 1040x600 mark, with 2x multi-sampling anti-aliasing. Combined with quality upscaling, the game still looks the part.

For Black Ops, there have been changes. To the PS3 version at least. The Xbox 360 version remains the same (our measurement comes in at 1040x608 with 2x MSAA) but it appears to be the case that the PS3 game has been reduced to 960x544, again with 2x MSAA. We'll post a movie tomorrow comparing PC running at native 720p to both 360 and PS3 versions so we can see exactly how the resolution cut stacks up, but it's fair to say that while the Xbox game has a slightly cleaner look to it, this isn't really a deal-breaker for PS3 gamers. Black Ops is a good-looking release on both formats.

...

While neither version is locked at 60FPS, there is what we've called in the past a "perceptual 60FPS", where despite the frame-drops you still feel as though you're getting the advantages of the fastest possible frame-rate. There's a fine line in this perceptual divide, but when there can be as much as a 20FPS difference between the two versions, it's safe to say that it's the Xbox 360 version that more consistently delivers the feel of 60FPS gameplay.

...

In the final analysis, Call of Duty: Black Ops is a good game on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. If this game were to be released as a PS3 exclusive without 360 as a frame of reference, it would be difficult to believe that the scores would be different.

...

For those with both consoles, the choice of where you spend the majority of your online gaming time must be factored into any purchasing decision - as was the case with Modern Warfare 2 before it. However, from a technical perspective, there's little doubt that the Xbox 360 offers the better experience: superior image definition, and a pleasingly smoother run of play.

Seriously though, this game could use some optimization eh? But I guess there is no need for Activision to spend time and money with it since it will sell like the fuck anyways.

I've got the PS3 version, and its fine, so this doesn't bother me one bit

I saw this...definitely not buying this new now. My friends are all playing it on PS3 but I'm not paying Activision for releasing a shitty port...

It would look so good in 720p or at least with 4xMSAA....

Well at least it runs very smooth.

You just saved me the trouble of writing that.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

1 respect.

I don't give  a half-a-flung-purple-turd about these newer CoDs and Activision's (and their dev studios') attitudes toward the franchise are unfortunate. I'm glad so many people find joy in the series but dislike what it does for the industry; nothing positive.

At least improve the damn tech! Devs have learned to extract MUCH more from the consoles than they could 3 years ago yet the specs on the CoD games remain identical with the most minute changes in graphics seen on this side of Vergon 6.

It makes me lol to see how the game is ugly compared to some PS3 Exclusives/Games, and yet they can't even make it run it at native 720P. Well done Lazyarch. Seriously why is there such a difference between developpers, where's the money given to Treyarch spent?

Really. Some modern smartphone games run at higher resolution than PS3 version of Black Ops. Really, really horrible port.

Well, I expected this somehow. WaW also looked inferior on the PS3, on the other hand MW and MW2 looked equal on both consoles. So I think Treyarch is the problem here...

I still haven't received my copy btw., although I preordered it..., pretty weird.
