"And for the first time ever Mario will be on a handheld system with an analog stick for controls. That's new."-
So what? That commentary was dumb and pointless. And despite of 2D Mario much bigger sucess, Myamoto seems to be still hypnotized at making 3D Mario (another one! I wonder when they will release Super Mario Galaxy 3, oh boy!)

yeah, why not. I'd love a third Galaxy.
And by the way, do you seriously consider games that sell less than 10 million copies not worth making? Because, you know, there would not be many games on the market that way.

They didn't sell Wiis, so yes they are a fail for a first party company.

They made a lot of money, which is kind of the point for any company :P
Besides, I bet if you took away all the "non-moving" games from any console, it would actually have sold much, much less. It may not have caused spikes but these games keep interest and add value nonetheless.
And, again, 9 million copies. How much money they made? And they used the engine for both games so the dev cost and time wasn't that high when added up.
They fund and make lots of games which clearly have no promise of creating those spikes in sales. If they considered that a flop, they wouldn't even try to begin with, so clearly they disagree with you.
