Forums - Sales Discussion - Electronic Arts Plays Catch-Up After Shrugging Off Wii's Appeal (Bloomberg)

PinkPoop, you need to listen to Ranzhic and play Godfather on Wii. I bought the game this weekend after hearing people continue recommend it and the controls show how a "complex" game should be done on Wii. The controls actually put you in the game. I just hope Jack Thompson doesn't get a hold of it. Once he sees/hears about the stranglation controls he'll be all over the news saying the Wii is the ultimate "murder simulator".

Well, it's been my goal to never EVER buy EA games of ANY color. I'm only going off of reviews which state Godfather Wii's existence as an interesting experiment that doesn't compensate for the fact that it's a port of a mediocre game. EA wanted to cash in, and they turned a typical GTA clone into a GTA clone with a few new features for a controller.

And people have stopped listening to Jack Thompson, he can't do anything.

Sometimes it hurts to go number 2.

which is more than you can say for your beloved PSTriple, since its already dead...

Not a single U.S. publisher had a Wii game in the top 20 in February.

And this would be different how if they actually released these games?

On ports/cash ins, see also: Zelda. Granted, it's Zelda.

Anyone buying Sims for consoles is silly. Which is why nobody buys Sims for consoles.

Pink, nobody said you had to buy it, that's when you utilize Blockbuster or Gamefly. I don't do those kinds of games, so I have no reason to try anyways. :)

wii_are_better_than_etc : You're welcome to your opinion, but keep unnecessary commentary to yourself.

Shane : We won't know how well 3rd parties can do for sure on Wii until they actually get some great games out for it.  And buying MySims for Wii won't be silly if it was a game designed from the ground up for the Wii remote, and not a game that was taken from a keyboard/mouse configuration and cramped onto a gamepad.

And PLEASE tell me why I should use the gamecube version of Zelda over the Wii version when I can control the Wii version's swordplay, archery, and other items/weapons so much better than any previous zelda?  I'd love to hear your reasoning behind this. :)

Hus : I ususally don't buy EA games because they don't make what I like, but when they DO, I WILL buy it if it's for a console I own. :)

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

I was going to post this article as well... has some really interesting comments in it.

Firstly, the perception that the Wii is some "stop-gap, lame console" to fill the console transition gap is out the window. Its here to STAY.

Secondly - look out for more & more Wii game related announcements. Said it before - eventually *every* big franchise/game will make its way to the Wii - in some form.

It doesn't matter what it *actually* costs to make a Wii title - once figures like this are published in a respectable news outlet - other companies/people will read them, and act on them. At worst, Wii titles cost 50% of a PS3 title - at best its closer to 10%.

In short - momentum for the Wii will continue to build (as will 3rd-party support) for at least the next 12 months. Now its up to Nintendo to capitalise, and get enough stock to market. The 16m shipped figure is interesting... (approx 1.3m/month).

One thing EA is capable of - marketing the hell out of a game. I can see MySims being a huge project for them, and I suspect it will sell through the roof. Really does appeal to the core Wii demographic (might even buy it for my wife if it gets good reviews - she always liked the idea of the Sims..).

Ive been playing the hell out of Zelda (nearish to the end now), and I couldn't imagine playing it without the Wiimote. The fishing, sword action & grappling (integral part to the game) is all very much enhanced by the Wiimote - and would feel lessened on a normal controller.

My wife is addicted to the "lure fishing" (its been 3 nights in a row now... doing nothing but fishing!). There is 0% chance she would have played at all on a normal controller.

Third parties have never done well for Nintendo. Even EA's most optimistic expectations are to finish second, which EA never does.

I still vote silly.

Zelda was designed for Cube. Then they tacked the Wii features onto it. This isn't indicative of whether it's better on one or the other, but this is the exact thing third parties have been accused of doing.

Wow, who knew the "death to all who oppose my views" attitude could extend to video games.  Come on Hus, just get a Wii (well, get in line so you can eventually get one) and enjoy it like every non-Sony fanboy.  If you already have a Wii then get over your cognitive dissonance and have fun.

On the point of this thread, this story dovetails with the other story about the Wii going gangbusters with new exclusives of late.  To be fair to the 3rd party people while I thought were idiots for ignoring the Wii I didn't have hundreds of millions of dollars riding on my conclusion.  That amount of money tends to cause people to be a bit conservative (e.g. Sony dominated the market means Sony will always dominate the market).  I just hope the catch up period of terrible PS2 ports with horrible controls is over.  I have the same problems with EA that most gamers do but they have put out more good Wii games than any other 3rd party dev despite missing the boat.

Finishing second on the #1 system is usually better than finishing first on a distant #2 system.  EA is making the best of the situation.  At any rate, 3rd parties have done well on a Nintendo system, the SNES.  They did alright on the NES but that was very early in the video game business anyways.  The N64 and Gamecube weren't the market leader and would have probably been like the Saturn and Dreamcast if not for the 1st party games.  If the Wii is like the SNES and the market leader it will likely see more and better 3rd party games and therefore sales.
