I cannot BELIEVE how many people are saying

"SONY STUFFED THE CHANNEL"

Yeah well the same thing was said last shipment time......so many people said when the last shipment was revealed that "SONY must have STUFFED the channelz"!

So if SONY "STUFFED" during last quarter do you think retailers are stupid enough to let them "STUFF THE CHANNELS" this quarter too.....HELL NO. Retailers won't let SONY stuff channels 2 quarters in a row.

Retailers would be more "cautious" of the PS3 this quarter if they felt SONY had stuffed last quarter

So what is it.....do we now accept SONY didn't stuff channels last quarter? Giving retailers the confidence to let SONY stuff channels this quarter?

This isn't a nursery school....retailers don't have a sudden urge to order in 2.7 Million more PS3's than they could possibly sell......puh-lease.

What about this: Someone just asks ioi for an explanation and whether the PS3 was undertracked or not.

Either Sony just stuffed the channel because there was a new SKU released last quarter (you need more stock when people can either buy a Move bundle or a hardware-only bundle) or vgchartz undertracked it.

There's no need to make a huge deal about it, really. You guys are fighting like crazy. It's quite possible that Sony stuffed the channel with the Move bundle and to reach their shipment targets and it's also quite possible that vgchartz undertracked the sales.

But neither screaming "overshipped!" without an end nor making comments that sound like vgchartz is intentionally undertracking the sales will help in any way.

So why don't you just calm down and ask ioi? And then accept whatever he says.

Well first off, Sony cant just stuff the channels store have to order consoles before Sony can ship them off. Secondly, I wouldn't just accept his answer because believe it or not he's not always right. Unlike Sony's numbers that are accurate and have to be by law.

Ok I'll give it another try: It is possible Sony stuffed the channels because of the new SKU with the Move bundle. Yes they can stuff the channels to some degree. I never said they did, though. That would surely be many units on shelves. I just said you should accept whatever ioi says because, frankly, this is his website and he's going to present you whatever numbers he tracked. You will have to accept his explanation because there is nothing you can do about it.

And that "believe it or not he's not always right" part was just rude and totally uncalled for. That statement was aimed at both sides of the people arguing here.

God damn why are you guys getting so crazy over something like this? There's no need to attack each other. If the PS3 is undertracked I'm sure the numbers will be updated. But arguing in this thread isn't going to stop it or make it happen.

If they do stuff the channel, the quarter to quarter shipments would show it.  Eventually, there will be compensation.  If the channel is stuffed in one quarter, there will be less in the next quarter.  If shipments come in at 7 million for Q3 (my prediction), then the retailer demand probably is the consumer demand.

What people are getting frustrated about is that the claims of overshipment and stuffing the channel are not being backed up by the ones that are claiming that.  If anything, retailers would probably be more cautious on how much PS products are being bought due to its performance this generation.

Well, reading yours and Darth's comment (which was funny ) I think it's more likely the sales have been undertracked. Sure retailers wouldn't want their channels stuffed all the time, although you can never know for sure because of the Move bundle being a new SKU and retailers possibly overestimated demand. But yes, it's more likely the sales have been undertracked in that case.

I just don't get why people are screaming at each other... well, I do get it but it's still a bit over the top.

Hmm, there must be some *serious* growth going on in emerging video game markets. Perhaps Tretton did not mispeak about shipping 20 million, and perhaps Sony's distribution advantage is coming into play again; in places where Wii was never distributed Move is like a genuinely new thing, and it is possible it is expanding the video game market within those regions.

Yeah

But when people start claiming SONY stuffs channels each quarter it becomes hilarious.

Retailers aren't tools SONY can just send millions of extra PS3's too

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I thought recently Sony began to track shipments to their own warehouses (as in not JUST retailers) as shipments on their financial reports?

Could account for some of the difference.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

I'm gonna say yes it could do with an upward adjustment, but the current LTD number is credible from a statistically acceptable error standpoint.

If we consider 360, the Shpped to LTD difference (on 2 Oct LTD sales in VGC) was just under 1 million and I think that's a perfectly reasonable number of consoles to have in the retail channels at any given time. No way PS3 sell though will be higher than that, so maximum PS3 sold to consumer number LTD as of 16 October could be as high as 40.6 million. I think it's likely Sony has packed the retail channels a bit more than MS (after all MS was trying to run down it's stock of phat 360s during the last quarter), so I think PS3's LTD sell through is no more than 40 million.

As at 2 Oct VGC had PS3 LTD at 38.54 Million. Assuming a true LTD on 2 Oct of 40 million PS3s that means VGC's LTD accuracy is 96.35%. That's totally acceptable for any given console. But there's also the possibility that Sony stuffed the retail channel with 2 million consoles, meaning true LTD could be as low as 39.6 million. That would give VGC an accuracy of 97.3%. That level of accuracy accross all 3 home consoles would be freakishly accurate for a site that uses various sampling and artihmetic techniques to estimate sales.

So while I think PS3 LTD sales could, and probably should, get a modest upward adjustment, VGC's current LTD sales figures are actually a vindication of the ongoing estimation and refinement work that VGC does. So I congratulate VGC on it's continued level of overall accuracy and integrity.

They used to (in 2007) track shipments to their own warehouses.  Now they track directly to retailers.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Can someone explain me this. If gap between ps3  and x360 is so small why games are selling better on x360 in spite of piracy.

because games are not selling better on 360,, except for FPS
