Where are these PS3's going?

There are independent sources (VGC, NPD, Media Create, GfK,...) in a lot of countries whose numbers match up well. Does anyone have ideas on what untracked regions these PS3's are going to or how are so many tracking services are off on just the PS3?

Or could Sony have some surprise coming, that they actually kept a secrete this time, that is going to require a lot of stock, like say a price cut for Christmas?

Thoughts?

Their PS3 numbers and VGChartz don't match up well actually considering the data we got today from GFK.

Courtesey of Ninty btw. Even Sony's competition say that PS3  numbers are undertracked lol

I pointed it out to Darth! Nintendo the provider of knowledge!

Ah so you did, my bad. Teach me for not refreshing the page after went to make a cuppa.

Don't know why Sony don't just quote GFK themselves when they throw numbers out. Would stop a lot of the "overshipped" crap

GfK doesn't track in many of the developing nations, which seems to be a big portion of the sales.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. Thanks Brett.

Hopefully this can put the shipped/sold arguments to rest.

Sure this will be ignored, but will mention anyway.  Over a year ago Sony said in one of thier reports that they count items as shipped as soon as they are ordered.  So if BestBuy (or anyone else for that matter) placed a order on September 30th for PS3s that have not even been manufactured yet Sony reports it as shipped.  Shipped really should  be called sold.  This isnt an uncommon accounting practice.

ok, I'm not getting into the over/undertracked thing, but I'm hoping to clarify some stuff.

Financial statement that I'm about to quote - http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/07q4_sony.pdf

"*Beginning with the quarter ended June 30, 2007, the method of reporting hardware and software unit sales has been changed from production shipments to recorded sales"

The 06Q4 results reads as - http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/06q4_sony.pdf

"*Production shipments of hardware and software units are counted upon shipment of the products from manufacturing bases. Sales of such products are recognized when the products are delivered to customers."

As noted, recorded sales mean sales to retailers, where previously they were just reporting what they manufactured. Due to this, If you just look through the financial results you get a wrong number (high by about 2.3m units for PS3, and I don't know if there is a proper way to fully count PS2 sales since their chart only goes back to 2006). However, Sony does have a web page that shows actual sold to retailer numbers - http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3_sale_e.html

However, reading through all the other Q4 financial reports I didn't see any notes stating that they count shipped as soon as they get an order. I'm under the believe that Sony follows the same reporting practice as Nintendo and Microsoft where a sale is recorded when products are delivered to the customer (or essentially no longer in Sony's possession).

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Can someone explain me this. If gap between ps3  and x360 is so small why games are selling better on x360 in spite of piracy.

because games are not selling better on 360,, except for FPS

Your right 360 has a 120million lead in software sales because of call of duty and halo... Because the 70 exclusive sony ips can't negate that... The only games that truely mostly sell better on the ps3 are hack and slash games and soccer games.

Just adjust the ps3 sales above the wii please so these people will shut up. You guys are seriously inpatient. Its very likely that numbers will be adjusted up for the ps3, just be patient and don't expect it to happen the day sony releases their shipment info. Its also very easy to understand that if the ps3 is shipped to many more markets then the wii and 360 then it is very likely is overshipped compared to the other two consoles since there are more retailers that can just have ps3s sitting on shelves. Like you guys state a small amount of consoles overshipped in all these areas adds up to a lot, unless that only counts for sales.

I mean since the gap between PS3 and 360 install base is small (less than 10-15%).

I knew that when the gap was 30-40% , software was selling much more on 360, and that 360 had a big software cumulative lead.

Oh the sweet tears of some here :P SOme just can't ACCEPT it!
