Forums - Sales Discussion - Dragon Quest 9 First Week Sales Japan

I was thinking about this and I really have no idea what to expect when this is released, I know DQ8 was massive with like 2.2 million in the first week, but does anyone suspect it can go higher than that?

This is probably my most looked forward to 'sales' news for the entire year (apart from Dec NPD figures).

First week numbers may be over 2 million, even 2.5 million... But what's interesting is if the game shows the unfathomable legs of NSMB or Pokemon. Those games did 100K+ for 13 and 15 straight weeks, respectively. Huge launch + DSWTF legs = 6 million sold.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Given the current install base and the popularity of the game they could probably sell 3-4M in the first week if they could ship that many, along with an extra 1-2M DSs.

2.57 first week.

Guessing numbers at this point is hazardous because this will be the first main Dragon Quest game that departs from the traditional gameplay of the series.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

It will likely hit 3m week 1, and 6m total

While that may have a slight affect on the sales in the end many will buy this on name alone.

Wasn't DQ8 the first to do that ?

DQ8 had some different aspects, but in most cases technically it was still technically following all of the previous main Dragon Quest games in gameplay, story style, characters, etc.  The only differences was the battle system VIEWED differently (but still technically plays exactly the same as the previous incarnations), and the 3d world view, which was always previously seen from a "sky above" viewpoint.

DQ9 for DS is going to be changing a LOT of things for the series, and a LOT of fans were startled at the announcement.  Things like real-time fighting and multiplayer have never been implemented into the series before, so we'll have to wait and see how things turn out.

Personally I want Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 DS a lot more. :)

First week DQ9 sells will only depend on units shipped by Square Enix : 500K as FF12 (and FF3) revenant wings first week? then DQ9 will sells at 500K, not more...
