Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is this your last Gen?

I am not sure how much longer I will be buying consoles. Each generation I kept buying more and more games until this one.

I certainly do want to keep playing games, but the industry seems to put so much pressure on mass marketing and audio/visual benchmarks that the time, effort, and focus spent on creating fun, engaging, and memorable games is no where near what it used to be. (This does not apply to Independent developers I suppose...)

I am hoping Nintendo or Sony (or maybe even Sega, they were never number one but they kept Sony and Nintendo working hard) do something to get this back to the way it used to be, though I am not sure how they would do it.

All of that said, I do plan on buying the 3DS (maybe my last console :/ ), with the hope that the games will be fun enough to continue buying.

Yeah, it's probably mine.  The trends lean so much to ultraviolence and pushing the limits of taste instead of making games more fun.  I too grew up on and love love love platformers but they are just not important anymore as even preteens want to play CoD instead.  I'm just having a harder time finding the TYPE of game I like to play, particularly among the high profile releases from the most talented development houses.

But hey, I started gaming as a tiny child in the late 70's so I'm entering my 5th decade of gaming (that just sounds nuts as I typed it).  Its something I already do less of due to schedule and economic reasons.  Maybe its just time ...

why does it have to be either or

its like saying i'm never going to the movies again

technology moves fast who knows what gaming will be like in 10 years

if i've always got a PC then i'll always have a game even if it its just a point and click

i understand you probably mean consoles but you know what i mean,of course nothing can be like when you're a kid in your room with hours to spare but no doubt you will play with your kids in the future at something

For home consoles, possibly.  Hell, I think I could've gone this gen with only DS/PSP, looking back.

I have moved on to PC for the most part in the last year... I just tured 25 a week ago, and am deploying to Iraq soon... The PC will work well there during the downtime, movies, games, etc, all from one piece...

My Wife is pregnant right now, so I will prolly get the next gen for our little girl in a few years. Probably Nintendo since I can get alot of the good "other" games on the PC. And it will have to make sure my kids get into Zelda (so many fond memories of ALTTP and OoT)

Where you going in Iraq. I was in Tikrit from 07 to 08? are you military or jusr government?

BIAP. I am an Army Officer.

Cant say much about timeframes on the internet for security reasons. 1st Deployment, I must say I am anxious to see what it will be like overthere.

good luck over there man.

I'll probably be buying Sony's and Nintendo's consoles next generation and probably pass on the next Xbox.

I really grew up in the jRPG days and have always enjoyed the genre.  Unfortunately, that's a genre that seems to be dying a slow painful death.  I'm thinking the PS3 Tales will be the last of the series since it appears they are going bankrupt.

It won't be because I want a wife and 2.3 kids.  But, I just don't care for all the shooters and online that seems to be taking over gaming completely.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

nah I doubt it. I will probably be getting at least one console if not two (Nintnedo's plus Sony's/MS depending on which is cheaper and has better games). But I have a feeling I will be buying a lot less games next gen, as there seems to be fewer and fewer games coming out that are appealing to me.
