And did you notice that what the article actually says is slightly different from what its title says? And that it doesn't list driving games amongst those playable while sitting? This could depend on how they chose to program that particular driving game, so just a SW issue, but then, again, why didn't they program it the right way?

Microsoft is all about this new "hey Kinect is the greatest, most exciting interactive thing since sliced . . .  interaction" campaign of their's. Why on earth they would have someone sit down and drive when they are trying to show the "zomg excitement" of Joy Ride?

Still, I'm not sure if it will work with Joy Ride persay, but the overall point is that it can be used that way. Which is also a reason that Kinect now recognized you due to your upper body more then waist or whatever it used before. Also;

Not sure if you can do THAT just yet, though . . .

well i am the gamers among my friends, i tell them whats hot and whats not and kinect will be a whats not because of this

hey SONY gave there ones out and there titles got poor scores yet they have sold 2.5 million units already and Sony are laughing.

MS who cares if your titles are a load of crap, because we gamers already know they will be horrible just from the cover. the main reason people want to get it is 

A) Its new: look how many suckers bought a 3D tv 

B) they want it first: again 3D 

C) causal s cant think twice and impulse buy 

Kinect will be find if all there titles get like a 4.

I just wonder what some of the reactions would be from the MS defenders if it was the other way around.  What if it was Sony who was refusing reviewers from getting Move and its launch games, and MS was open to it?  I can hear it already: "Sony must be hiding something."  "Move must be crap or they would let the reviews be known."  "OMG, Sony forced Kotaku to take down a video making fun of the Move?  They must be afraid of something."  "Move=Fail." 

Ok, we still hear that last one, anyway.  Point is, I know they would be bashing Sony if they were doing it instead.

It's okay however for Microsoft to let people try out Kinect in special Kinect booths at Gamescon, E3 etc. however, because that way Kinect's biggest problems do not get apparent:

Even though I think your third point is pretty moot, the other 2 are good points.  Everyone who has played Kinect has done it in environments set up by MS, which usually consist of plenty of space and bright white walls and floor.  I doubt everyone's setup is like that.  Take ClassicGameRoom's review for Move on Youtube for instance.  They were probably only 1-2 feet away (my personal set-up has me 3-4 feet away) from the PS Eye and the Move was still working fine.  I doubt Kinect will work with that little space available.  As for the second, MS has said it will work sitting down, but only if the game is designed for it.  So I believe you're either sitting down or standing up, no switching between them, otherwise it may screw up the tracking.  And not really trying to doubt MS, but I have yet to see a demonstration of someone using Kinect sitting down.

One more thing to add is that some have said that MS isn't hiding anything because they have it set up for people to play in booths across the country.  This is where your second point comes into play, as the environment is completely set up how MS wants it.  But another thing is, how long do these people actually get to play for?  5-10 mins maybe?  Is that really long enough to not only get used to how you control the game, but also to pick out any flaws that my hurt the game?  I doubt it.  With a real review, the reviewers will have the HW and SW to play with for hours, days, maybe even weeks.  It would be very easy to spot game-breaking flaws.

Of course, the main point is if Nintendo and Sony have the balls to put their products and games on the line, why doesn't MS?  Or a better question is since MS doesn't seem to, why defend them for not having them?

why not go a step further?

imagine living in a universe where Sony had developed Kinect and Microsoft came up with Move.

I like to do that when i'm in a Kinect thread and try to imagine what the people who support Kinect would say about it if it came from Sony. The ridicule would never end

i would even go that far to say that it's the "Console War" that plays into Microsofts hands. Because, in my opinion a product like Kinect is a slap in the face for every serious gamer, especially for the core base of the XBOX, since it doesn't cater for any of their favorite genres. But still people defend it as if it was the second coming of Christ. i do wonder how many fans are only supporting it only for the fact that it is Microsofts entry into the motion control market, and not because they are really excited for it.

ask yourself guys: what if Kinect was not by Microsoft? would i really want it?

I guess that's why I wrote: "Almost all Kinect games do not work if you're sitting"

And I've already explained a number of times what "Kinect games CAN be played while sitting down - if the game has been designed for you to do so" actually means - but I'll do it again once more:

The Kinect software library provided by Microsoft only supports a maximum of two active players, they must be standing up, and it has the huge lag that people are criticising. Developers can of course decide not to use Microsoft's software library (thereby avoiding these limitations) but that practically means that they have to reinvent the wheel, that they have to do all the data-processing by themselves, that they have to reimplement something that Microsoft has already implemented, something they spent dozens of man-years of research and work on. It's simply not really an option for most games. For example, if the game uses a skeleton representation of the player's body (and pretty much all Kinect games do), then there is practically no alternative to using the Kinect software library. "Your shape" is the only of the 17 launch titles that I know of where the developers chose not to use the Kinect software library.

That actually comes pretty close to what I wanted to express with my third point: There is a huge difference between trying Kinect for 5-10 minutes and being able to play it for hours. There are many potential flaws that simply don't become apparent within a few minutes of playing.

While what you say about Joy Ride makes sense from a marketing point of view, it clashes with what that article says and with offering the most suitable playing style for every game. Or maybe Kinect just isn't able to track the finer legs and feet movements people makes sitting while actually driving and needs the player to stomp his feet back and forth to get acceleration and braking input.

Oh snap. You're right-- it works with games that developers expect to use it in . . . only.

Yeah I dunno if its gonna work in Kinect Joyride . . . looks like its works sitting down situationally. If Joy Ride requires the feet or legs then it probably won't work sitting at all. Unless the devs have programmed it to play a different way, however.

For the game's sake I hope it works sitting down, because I'm never seen anyone ever play Mario Kart Wii standing.
