Forums - Gaming Discussion - Kinect's launch titles: doesn't look good

Some of you guys are missing the point these games are for the casuals. period.  wll they be quality???? probably not. but most of those Wii games arent either. Im a Sony fan but I give props to MS for being so ballsy with their Kinect. there not beating around bush, look at the money their spending on marketing there pretty much saying "hey put away your Wiis and Moves and play our thing instead, its much cooler!!!" their going right for the casuals, no cloak&dagger with them. This aint catered to the core gamer MS has them already, im willing to bet most XBOX360 fans will get it JUST because they love giving MS their money, no matter how the end product will turn out. im not even a MS fan, but I have to say bravo MS, bravo I think you have a hit. seriously

Many games on the Wii may not be "High Quality" based on some arbitrary standards of elitist hard-core gamers, but that doesn't mean they aren't high quality. While Wii Sports was (initially) criticized for having a handful of "mini-games", many mini-game collections with 10 times as many mini-games had a small fraction of the enjoyable game play because they were (comparitively) so low quality.

In many ways making a simple game that is fun and enjoyable is far more challenging than making a "deep" game, and the difference in quality can be more obvious; unfortunately, many people see complexity as quality and can't understand the value of simple games

I thing I'm the audience that Microsoft is targeting with Kinect, before the Wii I had only three consoles (an Atari 2600, a NES, and a SNES) so I was what Malstrom calls "a former gamer". I bought my Wii because of Wii Sport and since 2009's E3 I have been tracing Kinect news because in my opinion it has potential to provide creative and innovative titles. But since the last E3 I'm a bit disappointed about its line-up (full of Wii rip-offs) and its limited multilayer experience. For example, while Just Dance 2 features a multiplayer mode up to 8 gamers Dance Central features only 2 at the same time... So now I'm going to wait more to decide if I will buy Xbox 360 with Kinect bundled.

Why haven't I even heard of half those games?

I googled/youtubed Fighters Uncaged and I understood why they were kept in the dark ... the games' controls (at least FU) look terrible!

Listen to the comments he makes halfway through the video. I'm not impressed.

Hatmoza, no longer SF fan, but UF fan now???????

tho the lag looks absolutely horrible and the game itself looks horrible, I do see two possible good points with this game

1. THis if done well COULD be a good beat em up....Sengoku Basara style

2. Getting girls to play it :P Look at em bounce lawl

and yea btw OT: I look forward to Dance Central for sho

While the video does leave something to be desired, it is still far better than button mashers like SF or MK.  I would never get one of those, but based on the video I will probably get uncaged as even with the lag it looks fun. A proper K1 game with improve responsiveness would be awesome.

You might note though that the only one of the huge sellers in those genres that isn't made by Ninty is Just Dance, Nintendo seems to have had great success on the casual market but other companies struggle to replicate it.

Well depends what you define as "huge seller." If you mean over 4M in sales then yes that's true. If you're talking about Wii games that have sold more than a million copies then there are a ton of 3rd party games. I would classify most of those million seller games that I listed as hits.

Kinect is going to be a success because 3rd parties need it. Selling their casual games on 1 platform in many cases is not enough for them to make back their money. On Kinect 3rd parties don't have to compete with Nintendo for sales, so they have a better chance of standing out (ie: Your Shape Fitness Evolved). Kinect & Move gives 3rd parties a bigger userbase to sell to. They can make one game for Wii that they would have made anyway and then port it across all 3 platforms now.

@happysquirrel  im an elitist because I want good games on Wii? the standards I have now is the same standards for video games ive always had im not gonna give the Wii a pass just because Wii cant do some of the things the HDs can do and really do we need that much mini game compilations?? You know good well that maybe 2 of them are worth a damn the other 20 something can go kick rocks. and FYI didnt like Wii Sports too much, got a bit boring after a while.

Maybe I should give Wii a pass I keep forgetting who it was made for

How do you reconcile the fact that so many people loved Just Dance (critically panned) that now Just Dance 2 is one of the most preordered games coming out this year on Wii?

Quality is subjective.

Clearly most people who bought Just Dance thought it was a good game even though many core gamers disagreed.

anyone who thinks Street Fighter is a button masher most likely sucks at the game, you cant beat someone who knows what there doing by button mashing

@cool8man too true and im shocked at the sales of those games I never even heard of on Wii. And Ninty fans still wonder why they have so much "casual" games and not that many "core" casual games arent bad for the industry as long as devs keep that stuff away from my PS3 & PSP its all good

I wouldn't say the games are bad so much as not aimed at forum dwellers and with poor variety

@cool8man  Quality is subjective I never said it wasnt maybe I should have stated that??? Im sorry I thought it went without saying. I really dont care what a million people buy or dont buy, Ive never let what other people do influence my actions when it comes to what games I play.  Like I said, these kind of games are good for devs to make money on just as long as it doesnt really flood my system of choice and I get to keep playing the games I like its all good to me.

There are no games where button mashing will let you beat someone who is really good, but Street Fighter is one of the ones where you can do best by button mashing. Compare that to a real fighting game like Smash Bros where if you button mash you are likely to kill yourself.
