i just want some general knowledge about the similarities and differences between the two (or three if you want to include wii) online gaming resources i guess you can call them. everyone says that xbox live is worth paying the 60 bucks a year. then people say psn is better simply because its free. i just dont understand what the huge conflict is between the two.

I don't play online multiplayer so

PSN>XBOX-Live>Wii ness but they'e close... imo

Plus PSN has Wipeout HD FURY
But Xbox has Perferct Dark XBLA

Both have Lara Croft Guardian of Light ZOMG.

i would choose psn over live because psn functions more as an open network while live as a closed network. i enjoy open things, i hate being restricted, and above that, paying to be restricted? no thanks

With X-box Live you're basically paying to play online multiplayer. Many (although not all) of the other features can be found on the free Silver membership.

Some would probably argue that the interface of Live is more streamlined than PSN, but when it comes to features I think only cross game chat is the important one (Live has it; PSN doesn't). Then of course their are the exclusive games. You're not gonna be able to play Halo Reach MP on PSN.

PSN is also the more open system in that it allows more user content creation and mods in their games and will soon allow Valve to implement Steamworks into PSN. With Live MS run a tightly regulated ship and mods are pretty much non-existent.

There are other non-game related features like Netflix, Vidzone etc. But I think I mentioned the main game-related differences above.

I do prefer PSN over XBL, it's free, so I can just play whenever I want (and other features they both have), and if a friend/cousin comes and creates an account, he can play too, right away. Being mainly a PC gamer, I appreciate this, especially since there are times (lately) when I don't touch my PS3 for days, so I'm not losing Gold or anything.
