Forums - Sales Discussion - Enslaved doing pretty good on both consoles.

Well I hope it hits a million on both consoles combined. Perhaps holiday legs will give it a boost.

short game length with zero replay value (from what I've heard) means that I won't be picking this up.

I am getting vanquish but only because I can get it cheaply.

The game doesn't look that appealing to me anyway.

EDIT: Also, I'd be surprised if this game broke 900k sales.

Exactly. Yeah business is a bitch if you are a game developer these days but that's just the way the world works. Consumers of video games have a lot of options available to them right now and they are taking advantage of those options. Personally I will be renting Enslaved (after I'm finished with Persona 3 Portable, which will take awhile for me) and I suspect that a lot of people are renting Enslaved or will wait until it hits the bargain bin. At my rental place I'm subscribed to, Enslaved is a popular rental. Developers of short single-player games with little replay value are going to have a hard time convincing consumers that their game is worth $60.

Like I said, maybe it's time that there is a mass exodus of short single-player games to the Wii and handhelds (if it's a sub-$20 title, XBLA and PSN may be an option) where budgets are a lot smaller. No More Heroes and Madworld were profitable. They were successful cult hits on the Wii. Not sure about NMH2 though. It sold significantly less than NMH1 even though it's been below $30 for quite awhile now. At least in North America.

Castlevania isn't doing that bad I think. Look at the whole franchise. It never had that much sales. Or am I totally wrong? If it reaches one million, it is one of the better Castlevanias (sales wise).

The only CV to ever sell a million was COTM on GBA.  Even SOTN on PS1, and none of the 8/16bit games managed a million sales over their lifetimes.

That said, the budget for LOS could very well be more than the budget for all the 2D CV games ever, combined.  1.25m for a HD multiplatform game that was in development for 3-4 years, that had a big promotional campaign, that had a PS3 hardware bundle, that had extensive celebrity voice work, that had the involvement of Hideo Kojima... that's not exactly what I'd call "good".

Pretty good? you call 40k-45k WW pretty good? It's not good sales at all,not for enslaved or Castelvania.

First of all see what it did COMBINED on both systems

That is what matters

Secondly its a new IP therefore legs will be better

We cannot call judgement on a new IP at least until its 10th week.

Being truly a new IP is questionable since it's essentially the retelling of a story thousands of years old http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Wukong

Let's not forget that half of those sales could be on half price. Investment-wise, it looks like a bit of a flop.

Well then it was pretty much the fault of Konami trying to make an AAA title from a "little" franchise.

From where do you have the sales numbers of the Castlevania games? They are very bad tracked on vgc.

12.08.2010, prediction:

GT5 will sell ~10 million life time (after 20 weeks around 6 million, rest with legs).

Hmm PS3 version of Castlevania is already at 200k:

Week Americas Japan EMEAA Worldwide Running Total
1 46,329 N/A 34,748 81,077 81,077
2 24,359 N/A 17,393 41,752 122,829
3 22,975 N/A 12,013 34,988 157,817
4 19,620 N/A 23,030 42,650 200,467
Ten Week Totals: 113,283 0 87,184 200,467

And that's without release in Japan so far and it started to show Christmas season legs. It should get to 500k before end of 2010 and pass 1M before end of 2011.

Sure, and I agree with that.  It'd be like trying to turn Contra into a AAA FPS, and expecting the sorts of sales those titles bring.

CV sales were actually mentioned in the recent Gametrailers retrospective on the series.  They highlight that COTM was the only title in the series to ever sell (ship?) over a million units.

Enslaved and Castlevania have both bombed. For the amount of money that was thrown at Castlevania Konami will be seriously disappointed. But the HD flops keep coming, Blood Stone failed to chart on the 360  and only just made it into the worldside top 50 on the PS3.
