What GPU and PSU do you have?

Do you have any price limitations?  Maybe look into a SSD HDD or 2?

I'll take a look at the other stuff you have picked out now

Unicorns ARE real - They are just fat, grey and called Rhinos

Personally...

It's a little more $ but I think I'd go for:

I couldn't find that CPU on TH, I did find the 640 which I assume is a slight slower, comparison chart between 640 and the i7-860

Doesn't make a huge difference, but what GPU do you have?  All of the parts you listed aren't super duper top of the line, but seem to be really good parts for the money, so I just don't want you to have a GPU that is holding back the computer or a computer that is holding back the GPU.

My only other concern is the hard drive averages a 3 out of 5 star rating with like 2200 ratings...which might be something to be cautious about.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Well, for that price, you really can't beat the i7 processor...it really all depends on your budget.

Another thing about the GPU is you better hope to god it fits in your case...

Just bought the 5870 and had to do some PC surgery to get it into my case... that is one long friggin card

As for the HDD, if you partition the first 300 GB of the drive, it is faster than a Velociraptor 10000 rpm drive.

I'm not really worried about the PSU, because I can replace that part. Imagine I have the best PSU ever built.

As for GPU, let's say  a GTX480.

I have a few questions

1. Can I change the CPU in a motherboard after I've installed it?

2. Is that a cheap/crappy Motherboard? Are there any major features missing besides a second PCIE slot?

As for the case, I had it picked out, let's see...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108190&Tpk=maelstrom win

I would add 2 aftermarket fans. The only issue i can see with that case is that it might be a tad too narrow to fit a megalarge aftermarket CPU cooler, but it should be plenty big enough for any GPU?

Money isn't really an issue, but that said, I won't want to blow out the bank account. I want some items that are not "best of the best" but "best value for your money towards the high end of the spectrum" stuff.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Oh yeah, and that is a budget CPU, but it's a quad core 3.1ghz CPU so will a different CPU really give me that much of an improvement in gaming, which is usually GPU based anyway? Plus with an aftermarket cooler and that mobo, wouldn't I be able to overclock that cheap CPU and get some really good performance for the price?

Is it worth "downgrading" to the dual core i5 unlocked which can reach amazing clock speeds, but is an extra 100 bucks?

As for the i7's, they are great, but overpriced. They never lower the price, even as their quality vs AMD is getting narrower. The triple channel ram is a gimmick really isn't it?

Also, with that mobo, do I have to install the DDR3 in a special way. I've heard something about "only use the white slots" or something. Can I not drop 4 2gb modules of 999 latency 1666mhz ram in there and get the full benefit?

Why are the ram slots different colors?

NO NO, NO NO NO.

They would be different colours to signify *how to pair the modules in different channels*.  If you have 4x2GB modules, of course you will be using all the slots so it doesn't matter, but if you had 2x4GB modules you'll want to make sure that you have a module in both channels to take advantage of the dual channel memory benefits.

EDIT: The channels on this motherboard are channel 0: DDR3_1 and DDR3_3 and channel 1: DDR3_2 and DDR3_4.  So yes if you only have 2 modules put them both in the white banks as they are different channels.

I've decided to switch to this processor
