Colors in games are more important than most people think.
Super Mario Sunshine had an abnormal amount of orange in one level and that ruined everything.

Monotone dose not have to equal Hardcore and colourful dose not have to equal Gay but the colour palate of a Game should be appropriate to the Setting and Art Style. but Monotone should never be used for the sake of me to attitude found in a lot of Post Apocalyptic and Generic Space Marine Space Operas.

Blame the graphic "oh it's so pretty" race... it's easier to have stuff that looks great if half the textures are not elaborated because they blend together... you have more resources for the details in the focus of the point of view. I'm no gfx designer though, this is just a point of view

My idea in this are there are sides, people group with. (I'm oversimplifying to make a point, I'm sure there are more variations).
Group A
This side prefers colorful, games and really doesn't like dark, or not bright colors. They complain when a game is not colorful enough, even if the lack of color fits the game.
Group B
This side prefers not colorful, maybe they think it is more realistic. And complain when there's too many colors because it is too cartoony.
Group C
Prefers Games have a color appropriate for the game.
Now this is oversimplification and generalization. But, if you always have people in groups A and B, no matter what, there will be complaining.
The art should fit the tone of the game.
Maybe it's the tone that people are actually tired of?
Boring game is even more boring when colourless
chocoloco said: War is not happy and cherry. Why would you want a serious game like resistance or killzone to look like flower. Thoose games give a dark mood and games like that are great because war is hell. Games like Halo and uncharted are bright and colorful because they want to portray a happier mood with more adventure. @ CrossX You responded to me the other day saying you didn't like the atmosphere in fallout 3, was that because it was dark, brown and gritty. Basically, you say you like the style for some games and not others or your just tired of people contantly complaining? |
Because often they end up dulling things down even from reality. The world is a sight more colorful than, say, Medal of Honor makes it out to be.
Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
I really don't understand why the 'only' way to make a game seem gritty is to make it dark. Halo: Reach feels very tense and foreboding at some points despite a quite varied color palette.

Have you seen pictures from WW1 the terrain nothing but cater, bodies, no vegetation.
If you want a dark and suspensful atmosphere dark and bleak colors work, you can at least admidt that. I will also admidt some colors are fine in sunpensful dark games, but overdoing it ruins the mood.
