I know there are many many games that have transcended generations of consoles and have truly become gaming classics, indistinguishable with gaming itself.

But as we see reboots and remakes of old games, one can only think and say,"Was this game only good then?"

What are some games that you have experienced and or have seen that feel as though it was just right back then rather then now?   

Halo Combat Evolved. It hasn't aged very well

It was clearly a great game back then, but having just recently played it on PC, the campaign is kinda boring. can't force myself to finish it :/

Harvest Moon GB. The first (and only) game to actually give me blistery hands, I played it so much. XD God that game was addicting. Now, not so much, I guess. Though I'm sort of afraid to ever try it again...

now on topic: Games like Warcraft 2 and age of empires (1) were amazing back in the day but today, virtually un playable without some seriously dark rose tinted glasses. 

For me, the first Metroid game.  The one on the NES.  After making virtually no progress in 2 or 3 hours, I put it down.  I haven't picked it back up again yet.

Pre-StarCraft RTS's, especially WarCraft and WarCraft II.

Grand Theft Auto III has aged pretty well, except for its combat. And since the targeting sucks, so does the combat. Not to mention it's a pretty big part of the game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (all of them).  They were fun because they were capable games featuring beloved characters.  I can't think of a single game that I didn't love in the 90's because I was a Turtle fanatic.  I can't think of a single game from the franchinse that wouldn't make me cringe, nowadays.  I realized this when I played the Arcade game on XBLA a couple of years ago.

To a lesser extent, I think that the "space shooter" was just a product of the 80's/90's.  Society was obssessed with---Jesus, this lady on CNN's voice is so annoying that I can't keep my thoughts straight.  Good lord.

I would say Galaxy 1 2 is incredibly innovative and original.

You will all hate me for saying this, but I don't think Super Mario 64 has aged well at all. Also, I agree with Snesboy about pre-Starcraft RTS games.
