Forums - Sales Discussion - What will happen to 360 if Kinect fails?

1st off you present recommendations as requirements (space between you and Kinect sensor).  Secondly you take troubleshooting from the Kinect manual and claim they are requirements. Lets do that with the Wii and the Move manuals shall we.

From the Wii Troubleshooting section:

Check for interference from infra-red light sources, such as candles, sunlight, fireplaces, and stoves.
Radio frequency interference may cause the Wii Remote to work erratically. Check for wireless devices such as cordless phones, wireless computer keyboards or mice, or other similar devices, and move or turn them off.

You cant play the Wii in a room with candles, sunlight, fireplaces or stoves. Do not play the Wii where other wireless devices may be in use.

Move:

The motion controller may not be detected correctly if it is used in a location where the lighting is too bright or if it is exposed to direct sunlight. Check that the motion controller is not being used or placed near magnetic sources. When using the motion controller, avoid holding the controller closer than 20 cm from the face or eyes.

You cannot play the Move in a room with sunlight or have lights turned on.  Make sure the room has no magnet in it from items such as speakers and finally keep the controller away from your eyes so you dont burn your eyes out kid.

Finally I am sure MS would be embarassed and some heads would roll if Kinect fails, but it wont.

I guess that those of us with T-Rex arms are out of luck too

If kinect fails heres what will 99% will happen:

A number of ppl will deny it failed.

A number of ppl will gloat it failed.

Argument and flaming for a couple of days(with a lot banning here and there).

then topic will eventually get old and ppl will move on.

finish.

Kinect failure could bring a lot of good for gamers:

It will reduce lifetime of this generation pushing real HD consoles faster.

Second it will force MS to work on real games and to restore their 1st party studios.

Third - it will bring price wars back to the current generation.

I don't think much will happen.  It's been doing pretty kick ass pre-Kinect.  Kinect will be pure bonus as far as 360s sold.  It may not sell enough to continue game development, but I don't think it will ever have a negative impact on the # of 360s sold.

I don't see how Kinect can ever fail, even if it performs much worse than people expect and it sales comparable to Playstation Move or even less(again i don't see this happening), it will still boost X360 and it will still boost software. And with a $150 price tag Microsoft isn't losing any money either, at most the high marketing costs will have been a waste at first.

If kinect fails, there will be no kinect-enabled games made after a few months. Other than that, why would it have any effect on the system itself?

did the wii give us what we expected??

no one of the reasons i didnt buy them is because of the bad controls, but it still sold like hot cakes, if kinect is 100% efficient no one will care.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

Kinect will be released 3rd, after Wii and Move. So, to avoid it being looked at as a "me too" device, MS marketing must do its best to advertise its differences and that it allows new sports, fitness and dance games not possible with Wii, Balance Board or Move. Racing games without wheel and pedals aren't the killer games for it unless the vast majority of gamers suddenly want only to ride the invisible bike of the Hair Bear Bunch, but a few of them could enjoy some success, because who wouldn't like to ride that bike at least once?

Yeah I know the subject might be more fitting on the Microsoft boards but I want to get everyones opinion (Not just M$ fans). Not to mention I'm talking about sales figures.

We know that Move shipped like 300,000 units at launch. This is fairly good for a peripheral. Kinect is arguably even bigger and could ship millions this winter. But what happens if Kinect fails to deliver on its pormises? What if Kinect is before its time and isn't able to offer us a great new way to play?

Now what am I talking about of course Kinect will live up to its rep?

Well today Kotaku announced from the official manual. That in order to play Kinect at its best you need at least 6-feet between you and the system. 8-feet if your playing multiplayer. How many of the consumers who will purchase the product day one are actually aware of this? Will Kinect still work at about 2-3 feet from the TV (Like most peoples homes) or will it dissapoint the consumers who live in Apartments , smaller condo's or even some homes?

What homes are you living in where people sit only 2-3 feet away from the TV?! I think the average home will have at least 8 or more feet between the TV and their couches/furniture.  Sure some small apartments or dorms will not have that kind of room, but the majority will have plenty of room to spare.  My apartment has 8 ft from the TV to the front of my couch, so I should be fine.

Then theirs the camera according to the manual you need to keep it out of the light. No direct light this is understandable. But how many of the consumers are aware of this and will be aware of this come launch. What if the living room is facing outside these consumers will be let down won't they.

The Wii manual and PS Move manual say the exact same thing.  They just need to close the window blinds!

Then it says if your wearing bright clothes the camera may have problems picking you up. It suggests changing clothes to play Kinect. Or how about the fact that while Microsoft claims to have fixed the sitting down issue their isn't any software that enables you to sit down while playing, will that deter consumers and possibly lead to a backlash. Then theirs the official 200-ms delay and worse for other games this lag could dissapoint some consumers.

Again, this is only for games that rely on the RGB camera for aspects of the game.  It merely states to wear clothes that don't match your backround.  Also, where did you get this "official 200-ms delay"?  Last I heard it was 100ms and even lower in some games.  The majority of the delay is software based and varies from game to game.

Now don't get me wrong I would love to see Kinect become everything Microsoft is/has promised/es but what will happen to Microsoft's 360 platform if Kinect fails to deliver? Will a failure of Kinect hurt Microsoft's sales? Or could Microsoft weather the storm if Kinect fails and maintain the second largest market share? Would Kinect's failure lead to the Nex-Box coming out next winter?

You are forgetting that MS can market Kinect to PC owners as well.  If it fails as a 360 peripheral I am sure they will expand it to support PC's, home theater devices, etc. to enable the use of its features in other ways.  The 360 will go on unscathed, just without the major boost to sales that Kinect could have brought.

Just how important is a flawless launch of Kinect to Microsoft's viability in the console market?

Meh.  If it fails they will likely just refine it for their next console to iron out any of the kinks.  They will stay a strong member of the console market regardless.

I wish people would give up on the "Kinect is broken" nonsense. I'm sure there's just as much bugs in Wii and Move, but nobody makes a huge deal about them. For example, almost every Move game also requires the player to stand just like Kinect supposedly (and it's been debunked, not true) , but nobody mentions that at all. Or the constant recalibrations Move requires. Etc. And I'm sure there's tons of other issues with Move and Wii that people simply dont discuss.

There's just so many Kinect haters looking for every scrap of information to bash the tech with. An army of them really, and I think 90% of them dont even own a 360 anyway. Do you really think Microsoft is going to put out tech that just doesnt work? Give me a break. There will be bugs, naturally with such a new tech.

Like the whole big deal made out of "oh my gosh, you cant have piles of dirty clothes on the floor or kinect wont work!" what a stupid thing to make a big deal of. If the same thing was a caveat of Move or Wii everybody would laugh at anybody suggesting it was a problem.

Anyways, to your question: Nothing. Arguably Move has already failed, or at least not made a huge sales splash, and it hasn't affected Sony much has it? The same thing would happen with MS:Kinect.
