A portable computer is not a computer.

It's a laptop!

I did not expect it to keep going like this.
I thought it would have died out around the time the definitions were brought in.

Semantic arguments are always the biggest arguments :p

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

A console is a piece of hardware that plays software.

This thread is a prime example of lots of people on this site having too much free time. A 5 page argument over the semantics of the word console? Who gives a flying crap in all honesty?

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

What's even worse is the people who add judemental comments that keep the thread going.

NOUN

console (plural consoles)

  • A cabinet designed to stand on the floor.
  • A cabinet that controls, instruments, and displays are mounted upon.
  • The keyboard and screen of a computer.
  • A storage tray or container mounted between the seats of an automobile.
  • (video games) A video game console, especially as opposed to a handheld.
  • (architecture) An ornamental member jutting out of a wall to carry a superincumbent weight
  •

    I like 5.

You shouldn't as it doesn't actually make any sense as a definition. Look up the word handheld and you get a link to:

    Alternative forms
    hand held, handheld
    [edit]
    Etymology

    (see hand) held
    [edit]
    Adjective

    hand-held
small and light enough to be operated while you hold it in your hands.
    [edit]
    Noun

    hand-held
    (computing) a personal digital assistant

So the PSP and DS are now just PDAs? Man that strange since they both suck at that function. 5 wasn't a valid definition in any way shape or form, and thus kind of useless in this discussion.

To me and any English teacher in the world, a definition is the definitive word, and by definition the meaning of (video game) console simply is a standard platform that plays interchangeable games, it's been the definition since consoles were made, they were created as a standard device so development could be easier and you didn't have to worry about specs or various operating systems like on home computers.

Console - a standard hardware device that plays interchangable games

home console - a standard hardware device that hooks up to a monitor/TV not meant to be carried around and plays interchangeable games

portable console - a standard harware device that plays interchangable games and is able to be on the go.

And if you want to go into slang that seems to be thrown around a lot.

    Console -  A home console

    handheld - a portable console

MaxwellGT2000 - "Does the amount of times you beat it count towards how hardcore you are?"

Honestly the problem resides on some people who can't stand the fact that DS will surpass the PS2 as the best selling console of gaming history and for that fact they cherry pick it saying a portable is not a console or whatever they spin it.

    That's the only problem.

You do realize, he pulled that out of wiki?

I personally don't think of handhelds when I hear "console," though mainly because I've barely dealt with handhelds (other than Pokemon, and the recent DS). Sadly, it seems this thread is mainly filled with people with an agenda - the whole PS2 vs DS being the top selling console deal...

Bingo.  I still to this day not hear handelds called consoles until sales come into it.  No one in the real world calls them that.  You ask someone "Do you own any consoles" and never will they answer DS or PSP.

    That's where you are wrong.

In a lot of threads here in vgchartz, asking "whay system/videogame console do you own"I always see people listing portable consoles too.
