The fuck? Wii Music didn't cause Wii sales to collapse. It was doing amazingly during that period because Mario Kart and Wii Fit were still going strong. That was kind of my whole point. And then he says the price drop and Wii Sports Resort had no effect which is also completely false. He truly believes it was 100% Mario!

I wanted an answer as to why the Wii has declined so sharply after a record holiday season and the best he could come up with is people just stopped caring about the console because of Galaxy 2's existence. I guess he missed the part where I said I agreed with him on Other M too and managed to fit a mini Sakamoto rant in there. Pretty much everything else he said was entirely irrelevant.

I am disappoint. Maybe I'll have another go at it when I have the time.

What he is saying in his response is that the Wii is a failure and that it failed to "save" the gaming industry, pretty much the opposite of what he's been chanting all along up until this point. I think he is an angry, angry little man who feels ashamed for having been called out for what he is; a young guy who has read a book on marketing written by a person he looks up to who has gone on to write long tirades on his own intellectual superiority, the massive stupidity of everything not Nintendo and the "evil" gaming industry.

He really needs to make up his mind about this gen and avoid to further his ass-hatery by taking a stand either way. Either the market has grown (as it actually has) through Nintendo, MS and Sony and will total a lot more hardware than last gen or he has to admit that every single Wii customer is a purely casual gamer, having contributed nothing to the growth of the industry, subsequently admitting that every 10 million selling Nintendo title this gen is casual hogwash.

The guy has made an ass of himself and he knows it. He cites that the PS3 and 360 are failures because they fail to outsell the winner from last gen, the second and third place consoles failed to sell more than the record breaking, supreme market winner and leader from last gen, what complete and utter idiocy to say such a thing, does no one else see this? Leave him be and let someone else listen to him drone on with his incoherent drivel.

PS: How does the Wii crowd answer this guy, the god of all that is worth to know, when he himself states that Nintendo's efforts aren't good enough and that the Wii's sales are turning into Gamecube sales? Does no one see the contradiction from the beginning of his writing and all his bravado from just a while back? Can anyone take this guy seriously any longer? You have to choose between the love for the Wii (which is defended in every sales thread, disregarding the enormous sales slump as something of no importance, or even denying that it is happening) and your love for Malstrom who has made an epic ass of himself for real.

The point was that after the momentum of those games died down, Music and AC did not keep it. And expecting NSMBWii to just keep up sales for a whole year, but pretending Galaxy 2 and Other M didn't do their jobs is ridiculous.

Hm.

Animal Crossing and Wii Music = holiday titles. Wii momentum slows mid next year. It's Animal Crossing and Wii Music's fault!

NSMBWii = holiday title. Wii momentum dies mid next year. Not NSMBWii's fault!

Wat?

I hope you realise I'm playing devil's advocate to a certain degree here.

Sorry. Thought you were just being contrarian.

But then again, considering the view of the industry, he's beeing playing the devil's advocate all along.

Actually he was right, the difference is clear if you look at the facts, first off, the sales of Wii Sports resort didn't boost Wii sales much, nor did the price cut, but NSMB Wii led Wii to a record setting holiday.  As for Animal Crossing and Wii Music, of course they were momentum killers, before them Wii was selling amazing, then i petered out, even Iwata admits this,  and trust me, his internal data would prove this, on the other hand, he notes the huge success of NSMB Wii

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Not at all, what he is saying is that Nintendo diverged from the strategy that made the Wii and DS a success, and went with Wii versions of gamecube games which are failing and killing momentum, and he's right.  His earlier comments were  back when Nintendo was actually playing it smart, and releasing better games, right now the Wii is starting to look more like the Gamecube/N64 era

I think you're the one that needs to look at the facts. Wii was hovering around 150-200k in the months leading up to the price drop. It caused sales to more than double worldwide and they kept rising until the end of October before the holiday boost kicked in. Wii was selling over 500k before NSMBWii even came out. Yes, Mario was the main driver of sales but WSR was doing monster numbers too (it broke a million a couple weeks in December so you can't say it had no effect) and as I already proved, the price drop DID help a lot.

Personally, I sure as hell hope "the industry" which he has been lambasting for the past month is ontop next generation. I am going to be laughing reading his excuses for why God's system AKA any Nintendo console is not #1.

Then again, Malstrom never really started picking up his blogging until this generation was under way. Thusforth, to many including myself he may bash Nintendo from time to time for differing from the old school formula, but we all know where he stands. He stands with Nintendo, which is a precarious position for any critic of "the industry." which Nintendo created and is still heavily involved in.

The best thing Malstrom can do is come out of the closet with his biases. He needs to write a post titled "Why I am a Nintendo Fan" and explain in depth. Then again, if he does this then he pigeonholes himself and his credibility is shot and no one will take much heed to anything he says except those who are biased towards favoring Nintendo. Furthermore, this would make it easier for him to explain why Nintendo is not leading the 8th generation if Sony or Microsoft muscle Nintendo from the top selling spot.

I really have to agree that games are about enterntainment, not tech. Tech is just how the games are realized. GTA III is still awesome, even without HDR, Normal Mapping, and a high polygon count. Sure the 5th gen systems couldn't have pulled it off (the DS maybe, considering Cop The Recruit), but the game was good because Rockstar made it good, not the PS2 made it good.

Also, it's ironic that what is criticized in Hollywood is considered good in game. I see plenty of movie fans complain about bloated budgets, effects at the expense of story, weak scripts, and focusing on just the opening weekend, even if the film has no legs. Yet that's considered the way to go in gaming, even though games don't have all the supplementary revenue streams (DVD, TV airings, merchandising, licensed games) that allow large movie budgets.

I have to agree with many things he said in his last post about Epic Yarn. I plan to get the game but not at full price, I don't like it's too easy and all this level designs stuff is just a way to be amazed by "developer's creativity".
