Dude

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

The 3DS has technology that the Wii, Xbox 360, and the PS3 do not have.

It does?

Yes!

It's take too long to explain all the technical stuff. I'd rather you research the product for yourself. Then you want have to wonder if I'm misleading you.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

I was willing to pay U$500 for one, so this is a bargain. Pre ordering as soon as I can.

If it has things other consoles/devices do not, what are they? Simple question.

And to the topic: $299 is a tad high, but then again, I haven't bought a handheld in years, so this could be my first in a whil

The three killer features:

- affordable autostereoscopic 3D display

- a 3D camera you can point anywhere

- most important of all, it's self-contained and fits in a pocket

Lol I love the 3DS, but besides obvious handheld features like motion and 3D screen, you're full of shit.

How to save money on the 3DS

- No interactive play cards

- No Memory Cards

- No charger base

- Plastic stylus (the new one looks like its metal)

- Wait untill Feb/Mar when hopefully the US dollar has recovered some of its value, or untill the Yen has depreciated a bit

- No demo disc (probable)

- Charge 250$ BUT include a full game with it (something cheaper to develop and an amazing example of the tech - I heard Pilotwings Resort is frigging phenomenal. How about a Wii Sports 3D? )

- Charge 250$ BUT include a free film with it (Avatar possibly, but more likely Toy Story 3, since a bundle deal promoting Disney media could be a huge potential marketing deal for both companies).

ALL of these are highly probable, especially when you consider how much of the Jap. package is seemingly irrelivent to the system itself.

I'm curious what makes you think either one of those things will happen. The yen is likely to stay where it is or even appreciate some more.

Im buying 3. Two to sell and one for me :)

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

$299 is pretty reasonable to me but i am pretty well off so i can understand other people having a problem with that price.  nintendo probably lost a lot of money by launching at $250 when the market would have obviously payed more for their product.  i'm guessing they don't want to make that mistake again as they can easily lower the price in the future.

but anyways, i'm not getting a 3DS at any price so it means nothing to me.  I just don't think it's that bad of a price.  i mean hell, i'm pretty sure my mom pay $200 for my NES and SNES well the hell back when.

A handheld costing just as much as a regular console is just somewhat insane to me. I can afford it at $299,but it's the principle of the matter to me. If that's the price point,I'll get it in future. lol

Current console/handheld pricepoints in Japan for comparison... this probably gives a good idea of what to expect for America (hint: it won't be $299)...

  • PlayStation 3 slim 320GB: 34,980
  • PlayStation 3 slim 160GB: 29,980

  • Xbox 360 S 250GB: 29,800
  • Xbox 360 S 4GB: 19,800
  • Wii: 20,000
  • PSP 3000: 16,800
  • PSP go: 26,800
  • Nintendo DSi: 15,000
  • Nintendo DSi LL: 18,000
  • Nintendo 3DS: 25,000

Why just do not launch few SKUs in price range of $200-300, differentiated by internal memory size, 3G-connectivity or whatever features? They can lose a couple of bucks on low-end models, but receive a big margin on high-end models. That isn't smth they never did before (DSi, DSi XL models), or what Apple is constantly doing selling iPods for $230, $300 and $400. Obviously manufacturing costs do not rise that fast from low-end to high-end model, but in eyes of consumer prices are justufied.

No. Just no.
