Forums - Sales Discussion - Bungie calling out numbers for Halo Reach, saying they are WAY off.

are people forgetting that folks rent the game, borrow the game, pirate the game...online players is not indicattive of sales, if that was the case Demi God would be a multiple platinum seller in Russia.

The date says September 13th that's a day before Reach came out which would suggest lot of people got it earlier would it not?

that's cool how they compare it at first to what an old game like Halo 3 is currently doing.  How about they compare it to the launch of a newer massive game such as MW2, I'm sure the stats are similar, maybe a little higher for reach.

You realize they compared it to launch of Week of Halo 3 where VGChartz has Reach only slightly ahead of Halo 3's launch, whereas Bungie says there were 4x times more users online during Reach's launch week than Halo 3's and 65% more users online on Reach than Halo ever had even at its peek?

Reach is almost certainly undertracked.

Did they?  you may want to read it again, but a bit more slowly this time.

On Tuesday, 09/14/2010 at approximately 1:30 pm PST, just a few hours after launch, Halo: Reach’s online unique user count had already completely eclipsed Halo 3’s total tally for the entirety of the week (09/13 through 09/20)

I think you misread the above statement.....what they are saying is Halo Reach had more online unique users in 1 day then Halo 3 had the previous 45 days prior to Reach's launch.

I'm don't think that Reach is actually that badly undertracked (I wish it was though)

I guess time will tell though!

Epic post. Read the OP next time. Well actually we'd never have interesting posts like these if everyone did read the OP properly. So keep up the great work, this site wouldn't be the same without you! <3

The numbers are surprising, but could we really be undertracking such a hot title by so much? How could such drastic miscalculations be had about such a big game? I would assume the bigger the game, the easier it is to track, but I guess I'm wrong!

Maybe you should?

"To account for the same number of online players found in Halo: Reach during that same window (just six days), we had to run the numbers for Halo 3 going all the way back to 8/6/2010, encompassing a full 45 days of Halo 3 play!"

this is the same as PS3 fanboys claiming the World Wide 360/PS3 hardware gap is actually 3 million, not 5.6 million!!!

Problem solved, crisis avoided.

Still, disapointing sales for Halo Reach week 1.

Nomad is absolutely correct.  I was reading this thread to see if anyone else pointed it out already.  For those with poor reading comprehension skills:

  • On Tuesday, 09/14/2010 at approximately 1:30 pm PST, just a few hours after launch, Halo: Reach’s online unique user count had already completely eclipsed Halo 3’s total tally for the entirety of the week (09/13 through 09/20).
  • To account for the same number of online players found in Halo: Reach during that same window (just six days), we had to run the numbers for Halo 3 going all the way back to 8/6/2010, encompassing a full 45 days of Halo 3 play!

Read it again.  The week they are comparing is 9/13 through 9/20.  They are not comparing the seperate launch weeks against each other.  (The date of Halo 3's launch is not mentioned.)  They are comparing Halo 3 to Halo Reach for that specific week, which is ludicrous.  Of course Reach is going to beat the snot out of Halo 3, did they think all those Halo fans and new Reach owners would be playing the old game instead?  Further proof for the dates is in the second statement, they took the numbers back 45 days 8/6/2010 to 9/20/2010 for Halo 3 to match Reach's period of 9/13/2010 to 9/20/2010.

Before you make chest-thumping thread about anything, make sure read your data a little more carefully.

I have just the list but I also wanted to share an interesting data point: (that has been double checked) Halo: Reach was the number one game on Xbox LIVE for the past seven days and had nearly four times as many unique users playing the game on Xbox LIVE vs. Halo 3 for the week of Sept. 13.

This just a response to live activity from last week in which major nelson made an error.

this last weeks top played games

Halo Reach is not numero uno.

Major Nelson contradicted himself in that post. Reread the sentence you bolded again.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

I don't believe for 1 second that MW2 beat Halo Reach for unique users....thats just impossible.  Halo Reach averages 600k people online whilst MW2 averages 250k.

And if this is true i'm gonna break my 360 in half and never touch a videogame again.
