Forums - General Discussion - The Golden Rule: The Only Moral Needed

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

If you live your life according to this rule, The Golden Rule, then your choices will always be just and right. There is no need to code yourself with a system of morality concerning individual decision points, individual issues, or a "pure" lifestyle devoid of any of the possible range of humanly pleasures including illicit drugs and paid sex.

Well it does work in may situations, that's for sure.

Yes it does. I find it funny how religions be it Christianity, Buddhism or even following Bushido tend to have a convoluted view of morality.

Too much of Christian morality is following a joyless, sexless life like Jesus Christ. There is too much focus on what you put in your body as opposed to how you treat others. I hear from too many family and friends that trite ass phrase "Treat your body like a temple." Basically, doing this involves eating raw broccoli and tofu and drinking only water if you take it literally.

What morality and religious morality in particular misses to a large degree is how we treat each other. I have family members who go to church every sunday without fail for the past 20 years, but 6 out of 7 days of the week they are the most spiteful, vile creatures towards others of their own species. They believe going to church on Sundays and through faith alone, God will accept them in Heaven. What they forget is, God may ask the question,

So Darla, I see you went to church every sunday, but how did you treat others throughout your entire life?

How we treat others is how we are viewed by others. It shouldn't matter if your diet consists of rice, tofu and raw broccoli; what should matter is if you were nice to that asshole co-worker or not.

It works at Mcdonalds. Nobody has tried to argue with me yet.

Yeah, kinda funny. They spend so much time focusing on theirselves that they forget about other people.

Awesome angle, I missed that completely. I guess it is okay if you put a sadist and masochist together, but a sadist and an alpha female or male, yeah you are right.

yeah nice idea but doesn't work.People have very twisted views and quite a few would probably enjoy making otherts suffer and then enjoy their own suffering.

Then those "quite a few" should expect their misdeeds to come back to them.

If you spend your life screwing other people over, then expect to get screwed over at least once. For example, if you cheat on your lover, then don't be surprised if a future lover cheats on you.

Then again, morality like life can be quite ironic. Those at the top echelons of society, I am speaking of CEOS, are rewarded with higher salaries and golden parachutes for "restructuring," which is just a polite term for firing thousands of workers. It is not fair, but human beings are not helpless creatures at the complete mercy to those above them in social ranking to tell them how to live their life. We are all individuals and we are affected not only by the choices we control, but those out of our control.

I will not lie, life is not fair. Most are born without the parental crutches Donald Trump had to turn their parent's hotel company into a multi-billion dollar hotel franchise. Most of us come from modest means and can only dream of one day having the 5 bedroom house with a 3 car garage filled with luxury cars.

The point of, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is to live your life treating others as how you would want them to treat you. We all want to be treated with respect, sympathy, and honesty. If you want to be treated well, then take the initiative and start living it through your interactions with others.
