Forums - General Discussion - Who makes the movie trailers?

I just sat watching through some trailers on Apple.com, and this question popped into my head.

Who is it that makes movie trailers? Is it the director for the movie, third party companies, or inhouse trailer divisions? Cause sometimes, trailers are really, really, really good. And sometimes they suck. Often it has very little to do with the quality of the actual movie.

Who, for instance, made the amazing trailer for Easy A I just saw, or the absolutely fabulous first trailer for Kill Bill (still my favorite)? Who, for that matter, is responsible for the masterpiece that is the Mass Effect 2 trailer?

Somehow, this makes me extremely curious.

Around the Network

Most of the time the marketing team from a studio talks with the director and producer on how they want to promote the movie... scene's and shots are chosen and they then devise a narration based on selected scenes and chose the music, graphics and voice-over... and some low level kid edits it all together...Some marketingteams are really good.. and they can really sell bad movies with a 30 sec trailer..

there are expection of course with movies having scenes and stuff in the trailer without appearing in the actually movie.. like Psycho, Terminator 2 and Spiderman.. in those trailer there is a more involvment from a director and producer themself..

Do you know any instances where a movietrailer was actually made by the director? In big hollywood productions, I mean. I'm guessing many indie titles have directors make the trailers. At least I expecting it to be more common there.
