Stephen Hawking: God didn't create universe

God did not create the universe, world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book that aims to banish a divine creator from physics.  Hawking says in his book "The Grand Design" that, given the existence of gravity, "the universe can and will create itself from nothing," according to an excerpt published Thursday in The Times of London.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason why there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," he writes in the excerpt.  "It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper [fuse] and set the universe going," he writes.

I was wondering how long it'd take someone to post this with the number of religion/god threads we've had recently. Did people really expect him to say anything different?

seriously, i can't believe this is such big news...

Hide your kids, hide your wife

Hawking use to be more religious in the past, atleast that is what I got from some of his books and speeches.  Like Albert Einstein before him, Hawking would use God in some of his explanations, but Einstein was privately an atheist who considered religion a silly child's myth while Hawkings private ideas about religion haven't really come out (atleast to my knowledge).

I don't know much about Hawkins. Could somebody please tell me why he's in his current state (fully paralised)?

He can still use his eyes and some muscles in the face, which he uses to communicate.

I'm not sure if he was. From what I've read (and my understanding of it) he'd just use god as a concept to help get his theories across or to make his writing that bit more entertaining.

Given the current mood of religion vs science and religion vs religion affecting much of the world and causing a great deal of unrest, I'm curious what you would consider big news... Halo on PS3?  MGSIV on 360?  ;)

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Hawking has a neuro-muscular dystrophy that is related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a condition that has progressed over the years and has left him almost completely paralysed.

never actually new what the name of what it was but knew about it. the doctors said he had 6 months to live when he was diagnosed that was quite some time ago.

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).
