Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft to increase price of Xbox Live Gold

While its true that this is just an inflation adjustment.  I think people do have a point that they are increasing the price of something that is free on other platforms, and that won't change.

Consoles are closed box monopolies. If people truely hated what monopolies do then then why didn't a boycott start at step 1: Whether or not to actually buy a console? People pay at least an extra $10-15 average for the right to play any third party game on a console and the 1st party games are padded to match as well. This whole thread is about being screwed in the butt by an 8 inch penis vs a 10 inch penis. People are complaining about the extra two inches and ignoring the fact that they've already got all 8 inches up their butt anyway.

Tease.

You let me know when you find a free service on PC that integrates all your games both offline and online with a single profile, integrates cross game chat, party chat up to 8 people, includes matchmaking services for fair and balanced gaming experiences, also offers services like full game downloads, demos, videos, netflix, facebook, last.fm, ESPN, achievements, etc.

You mean like X-fire?  Which is free, btw.

I said ONE free service that integrates ALL of those things.

X-fire gives you a single profile with cross-game or even out of game voice chat, friends list, lists what games you play, can jump you straight into games with better than matchmaking options, the rest of the stuff you mentioned is either free anyway or part of silver thus you aren't paying for it with the Gold fee.

So in other words there is no free service that integrates all those features in one place.  Thanks :)

Stop trolling, I just proved a service that offers all of what Gold provides for free and you ignore it.

No you didn't.  Xfire doesn't offer full game downloads, user created games, facebook, netflix, last.fm, ESPN, matchmaking, etc.

I'm not trolling at all.

You are listing things that are free or have additional subscriptions ON TOP of Gold subscription, thus are not a reason to subscribe to Gold.  Gold offers very little and what it does offer can be found for free using X-fire.

But you are still dodging my orinal question.  I said find one service that integrates all those services.  Sure you have to pay extra for Netflix, but the part that is accessible via Xbox Live is not extra on top of a normal DVD rental subscription.  Xbox Live integrates all those features and services into one place to access them all.  That's what I stated originally and asked for you to name a free service that does all that.  You haven't.

There is no free service that brings all those things into such a convenient, all-in-one package.  Just admit that.

I feel the vocal ones against this see the bigger picture of how this industry is intertwined. Some of us see beyond the breakdown of cost per day, etc. and see the bigger picture of the industry.

MSFT is very influential in terms of online gameplay because of Live. If they can get away with increasing the costs on a section of their Entertainment and Games division which is already in the black and offering bonus things (Last fm, netflix, facebooks) that people use for free elseware and things like ESPN (ESPN3.com allows a lot of free over the web viewing of major events) then companies can/will follow suit.

I suppose my (cant speak fo rthe rest) frustration is equally split between MSFT for knowing this and doing this and the gamers here who dont give a shit because of bias and refuse to see the precedent being set by this.

It was one thing for charging for online play but the fact they have ads already, make nearly 1 billion a year on this section and the features they claim to add are FREE everywhere else, the fact that some people truly have no sense of the bigger picture as consumers is really sad for me.

I wouldnt give a shit if this industry wasnt special and completely dependent on one another. There isnt much differentiation anymore, 3rd party exclusives go the way of the do-do, this gen there are very few differences and things like this dont bode well for the future, imo.

Now, queue up the tinfoil hat comments, i dont own a 360, its only X amount per day, but if we could step back and see whats actually happening......... its not good for any video game fan.

AMEN!

The thought of anyone thinking this is a good thing boggles my mind, because this route that people are accepting is a bad thing for gaming. A bad thing for fans of all consoles.

Things like this are the reason why Activision is thinking about Pay to Play for titles such as Call of Duty.

Things like this are why Miyamoto mentioned that Nintendo may charge for online play in the future.

Things like this are why SONY will follow next gen, especially if Nintendo does.

The right route would have been to cheer on SONY with their quest to equal LIVE, then keep PSN free and then hope that eventually MS followed suit and gave them LIVE online gaming at zero charge. That is win/win for the consumer. This is lose/lose since they were already making 700M in profit, now raise rates and you still see no new exclusives because of your investment.

But that would have made sense. The reactions I am seeing here unfortunately do not.

I'll just say "I'm surprised it took this long!" or "I think it's worth it so i'll pay it!" once Cablevision raises my rates again.

That'll teach em... -__-

I've visited other forums like Neogaf and such, and it seems there's quite a few people switching from X360 to PC now. Seems for many of them the price increase was the last drop.

That's weird.  I've been to many forums like ArsTechnica, Neogaf, etc. and there seem to be many more people switching to Xbox 360 or PS3 instead of playing on PC these days.  Seems the hassle with hardware, driver issues, operating system issues, the added costs involved for keeping up to date hardware wise, etc. has finally pushed them to switch.

If MS's next report on their live profits are quite a bit higher i hope people realize it was completely unwarrented. Live is already very profitable and didnt need a rate hike to cover inflation they could have delt with slightly less profits. But this is how i feel, i dont own a 360 nor will i, but it does affect everyone sooner or later. PSN more than satisfies my needs.

If things work out as expected (Seeing as how many of you expect it to happen) I hope you are all happy paying $150 or more a year to game online if you plan to own all consoles again.
