That's probably the most popular excuse why the PSP couldn't beat the DS, but it's seriously flawed. Remember that in the mid '90s Sony entered a market dominated by Nintendo and Sega and crushed them both with their first go. The Playstation did this without having a known brandname.

The PSP however was released at the peak of the Playstation popularity and every 3rd party publisher was backing it right from the start with their big names like GTA and MGS. The PSP had the most popular brandname in videogames and much stronger 3rd party support than the DS.

If you consider these circumstances the PSP clearly hasn't done fantastically, in fact the contrary is the case. It failed to meet the expectations of analysts and more important, Sony itself. Especially in software sales.


Actually the barnd was SONY , and that saied a lot ... also , back that Sega and Nintendo where pretty close ... I would go as far as saying that Sega could have won the 5th gen , if Sony wouldent have entered . Also , the Nintendo portable market had 15 years to fully evolve alone on the market ...


Sure, Sony is a powerful brandname, but in the videogames market it wasn't nowhere near as powerful as Nintendo and Sega at that time. The Playstation was the new kid on the block, while the Saturn and the Nintendo64 were from companies that were well respected by gamers.

It's hard to tell whether or not Sega could have won the 5th gen in an "what if" scenario. There are just too many variables. Also, it's off topic and belongs in a seperate thread.

Sega Game Gear, Atari Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket, Wonderswan. I wouldn't say that Nintendo was alone in the portable market. It just seems this way, because the Game Boy crushed all competitors in its way.


 Sega was the defeated back than , so it wasnt hard to overrun him , while the N64 came IMO to late , and with its cartidge based games , it came with to litle . Developers where forced to go on Sonys side , and support the cheaper , CD based games ... thats why Sony could enter so easily into the console market :)

erm, I don't know if you noticed, but DMeisterJ said "Be Quiet!" first.

So you can't exactly attack Kirby for not talking seriously. Of course, you have to blindly attack the person who doesn't like your console of choice.

On Topic: This thread really is useless. And please don't make another one when DS reaches 69%, 70%, etc.

If it asnt for 80% of the people that own a psp that ownload torrents we wouldnt have this problem.

Even though I can do it I dont becuase its stupid. And illegal.

I have a ds and psp, my opinion the psp has better games. The oly games the ds has is a HW game, and mario.

Well its not really 80% , because games are still selling ... but its definatly has one of the highest piracy rate from the history of gaming :(
