Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 will surpass Wii in million sellers

That's the way it seems, the PS3 has been catching up to the Wii for quite some time and by the look of 2011 it should really catch up fast. Currently the PS3 has 62 million sellers and the Wii has 84, so a difference of 22 million sellers so far.

Here's an interesting fact, 27% of million sellers for the Wii and PS3 is both from first party studios. By the looks of things Sony's going to have  a huge list of exclusives and from what I can see at least 90% of them will be million sellers in 2011. Not to mention a big list of games coming in the Holidays of 2010 and the fact that the HD consoles pretty much owns all the big third party games, so that's a lot more million sellers coming there. The Wii has a good amount of million sellers coming this Holiday but not a whole lot of big games announced for 2011 (that could change, but so far it's not looking great).

So you heard it from me first, I predict by the end of this generation the PS3 will surpass the Wii in million sellers.

Keep in mind though, Sony generally reveals their games more ahead of time while Nintendo does not. There could be ton more games for Wii in 2011 that could reach a million. Many that we probably haven't heard of or never thought would do it.

If freakin' Highschool Musical 3 and junk like that can make it to a million on Wii, all bets are off.

Just dance 2

Goldeneye 007  ( maybe it will hit 1M in 2011)

Kirby's epic yarn

Donkey kong country returns

Metroid other m

Epic mickey

Wii party

Endless ocean

Sonic colors.

These will likely sell 1M this holidays, so wii will have at least 93 Million sellers before 2011.

Don't know about PS3 (they're more or less the same library anyway) but I have around 15 games releasing from now to 2011 on X360 that will more than likely hit 1 million.

So you need to make your list bigger!

Ok in addition to the ones I've already listed,  Skyward Sword, mario sports mix, call of duty black ops, Wii relax? Pikmin 3? 14 games so far, we shall see if Nintendo annoucnes more games on 29th September.

Buying in 2015: Captain toad: treasure tracker,

mario maker

new 3ds

yoshi woolly world

zelda U

majora's mask 3d

Possible, but 22 is quite a large gap to close. For Wii you have to consider that in addition to the obvious ones there will be a number of random games that sell very well out of nowhere also, as darth mentioned. I do think that the gap will close some but not until after 2011 when Nintendo has stopped supprting the Wii seriously.

Edit: After taking a look I think there are some more games to add to the list of obvious million sellers on Wii.

Sega Super Star Tennis, Wario Land Shake It, and Toy Story Mania, and Disney Sing It: Pop Star Hits are all very close to a million and still selling. I think they will all pass a million by the end of the year.

Other games coming out this year like the Raving Rabbids game, New Carnival Games also seem near certain to me to cross a million. Then there are a handfull of other games that are sequels to games that sold a million so they have a chance too. So I think it will be awhile yet before the PS3 has a chance to really make up a lot of ground on the million sellers front. But the PS3 has certainly done a good job of selling software so far.

@ seece the only thing that i can find is my thread it posted the million sellers for both the wii and ps3 back then in there and it was even pointed out in here apparently you werent reading

                                                                      Play Me

I've done a little research :

- on 83 Wii million-sellers 57 were from third parties (67%)

- on 62 PS3 million-sellers 47 were from third parties (76%)

not a huge difference, but...

- on 83 Wii million-sellers 34 were released in 2007 or before (40%) and only 2 in 2010 (2%)

- on 62 PS3 million-sellers 11 were released in 2007 or before (18%) and 6 in 2010 (10%)

conclusion : many Wii million-sellers actually hit 1 million in 2007-2008, when the Wii hype was at its climax and since then, the number of Wii games hitting 1 million has slowed down as third parties withdraw from the system and as Wii becomes less popular.

Many Wii games are close to 1 million so it will be difficult for PS3 if those games keep selling. But as for new releases PS3 will achieve more million-sellers since Nintendo alone cannot offset Sony & third party support.

LoL, No it won't. That's just wishful thinking. But whatever. All we can do is just wait and see.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Mmhhh, I'll wait to see how the big games of 2010 performs before doing a prediction like this. Fallout 3 New Vegas, Assassin's Creed Brootherhood and Medal of Honor could set a nice reference for this. But ... Will it surpass XBOX360 million sellers???

I don't think so. Even though the Wii tends to have sales concentrated on a few titles in the 5,000,000->infinity range, I would say that the 22 million seller gap would be insurmountable given the rate that gap will close won't be very fast at all. As the PS3 grows, it has been following the same Wii trends with the larger sellers just getting larger whilst the spread of million sellers isn't growing nearly as fast.

Tease.

It's really hard to tell at the moment, I do think it will, but it could easily go either way

This will probably happen, but mainly because more 3rd Parties strike gold on PS3 than Wii. A lot of these devs put sub-par (according to reviews/word of mouth) games on the Wii and thus the result is "no thanks" from the public. Or they put games on the system it's demographics don't care for (The Conduit/Madworld).

please conduit and mad world both had huge flaws and length issues.
