Haha so this is why Scott Pilgrim vs the World didn't hit Wii Ware despite that game being nothing but a 2D brawler

See he feels the Wii is just a Gamecube, which if we are to believe the fan warz of last gen Gamecube was the weakest console out of the three cause it had all the kiddy games, so yeah... it couldn't even do 2D graphics... yeah so Wii... can't even make 2D graphics... lol

Really though this is what I always tell people, look up the people making these comments, 90% of the time they might be a dev but it will be a dev for someone else, in this case the guy is an artist... not really in the know when you're discussing hardware.

The last paragraph seems quite relevant here. If he's an artist, he will likely know the specifics of what needs to be downgraded from the best quality possible in 3D, i.e. lower res textures, lower poly count, etc. and that will form the basis for his impression of the Wii. He is not going to care about the tech specs, only about how much detail he has to leave off the final assets, so to him, the Wii might as well be at the same level as a Gamecube.

You really don't need to be that up and up on all the info, it really depends on your level cause you can be a grunt just doing the textures on someones toe if he's the lead he needs to know his limits and what he can cover up where power is lacking.  I can't get any solid info about the guy other than he was an artist on a 2D Brawler AKA Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game, I haven't found much else on him, but the thing is you can be an artist and still not know about the console, really I dunno if you've seen the actual textures on Brawl but they're high res with a crap load of detail but you simply can't tell cause of standard definition.

So really he could make a highly detailed piece of art for a game but you might not be able to see it

I'm not sure if you're agreeing with me/yourself or not lol... I agree on the fact that an artist probably won't be that knowledgable on hardware specs, but even that grunt will know generally how big that texture should be, or will end up being, and how much he/she has to fudge what it's supposed to look like. It doesn't seem worth the time and effort to put more detail than you can see in the final output.

Well I was generally saying they don't have to work within specs backing up the fact they don't need to have a good knowledge of the system that's for the coders to figure out and make a engine that runs well

I'd say the team that needs to know the limits of the system most would be coders and the guys sculpting the models and building the levels since that has a real effect on each other the engine handles applying textures and video output.

The last people that should be opening their cock holsters about anything quality related is anyone that works for Ubisoft.

Do I believe the graphical jump from GC to Wii wasn't big enough?

Yes

Do I believe the Wii is more than marginally more powerful that the GC?

Yes

Do I think not just that this guy is wrong, but is a bit of a knob for publically saying it?

Yes

So then... the artists? LOL... unless you mean concept artists or just texture artists? Modelers/3D artists often have to create textures as well, so I was just using that as an example.

Million seller for sure. We will eat it up just like the rest of the world.

I don't think people here are quite using their brains.

1. The OVERALL capabilities from GC -> Wii were less than 25% of the increase of either the Xbox -> 360 or PS2 -> PS3. It wasn't much of a buff from Gamecube in perspective terms. Is it basically the same thing? Sadly, yes. While the Wii might be more powerful, it still can't really do anything that the GC couldn't do other than render a few more polygons.

2. Nintendo fans are huge retro fans. They will be a Nintendo console just because its a Nintendo console. They will buy NEW Super Mario Brothers just because its a Mario game, even though its not a huge technological advancement over Mario games of 10 years ago. Saying that the WIi doesn't equal the GC just because the Wii sells better is futile.

3. You can't say the Wii is more powerful just because you think that the best Wii game looks better than the best GC game. Sorry, but technology has advanced outside of the gaming industry in leaps and bounds between now and when the GC was current gen. Games were going to look better regardless of hardware. If the GC was still current gen, the games would look far better now than they did 5 years ago. Another futile argument.

4. I'm still stricken by the amount of people who relentlessly and aimlessly defend the Wii's shoddy capabilities when someone brings them into question. Even IF its more powerful than the GC, the Wii is still a last-gen console in terms of hardware output and game quality.

all I know is Ubi shot themselves on the foot as their next games on Nintendo systems are gonna bomb harder than POP:FS and RS2!!!  I for one have stopped buying their crappy games on Nintendo systems.

I pose this question Mr. Lavigne,

From what you are saying, I can gauge that you believe hardware is as important, if not more important than software in driving console sales. If this is the case, then why has the "refurbished Gamecube" to use your terminology, outsold both it's competitors, one of which has arguably more raw graphics processing power than the Wii and 360 combined?

How is your opinion, Mr. Lavigne, worth more than the 73.3 million customers who chose Wii over the 37 million customers who chose the PS3 or the 42.3 million who chose the 360?

If you value graphics and visuals so much Mr. Lavigne, should you not be in the film industry?

Read my #2 above. Nintendo fans buy things because they are Nintendo products. Nintendo fans buy Mario games just because its Mario. They are retro fans.

Other than that, 'younger' gamers are more likely to get the cheaper kiddy console for Christmas than the slightly older ones who have to get a job and buy it themselves. The Wii doesn't outsell because its better, it sells better because its targeted to a younger audience (other than the retro gamers).

Fine, it's a refurbished Gamecube, but it's apparently a refurbished Gamecube that 73 million people want.

Makes me laugh how these tech whores get their panties in a bunch that such an underpowered console is kicking the taints of the "amazing" powerful HD consoles.

underpowered console 73m

"amazing" powerful HD consoles 79m

people like their HD gaming too

Wii60 = 115 million

PS3 = 37 million

I guess people also love their non-Sony non-Blu ray consoles!

See how silly it is to compare the sales of two consoles against one?

Also, keep in mind 360 came out a year before the Wii. If it had not, Wii probably would have more sales then both HD consoles anyway.
