Excellent article. Really brings the debate to the front lines.

The fact that this is even a controversy makes me sad.

This is a pretty epic Fail America. *Shakes head disappointingly*

Muslims in USA don't have it as bad as Christians in the middle east. Religious persecution is a huge deal in middle eastern and southeast asian countries. I did a study project last year on Christians being tortured and killed in Burma and having to flee to Thailand to escape death.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that it is sad this is creating so much controversy when there are much bigger issues to address (BP oil spill, the economy, etc.) but Muslims should just be glad they are allowed to freely practise their religion and not cry over a little controversy.

You also have to remember the simple fact that we have the freedom of religion in America. Not every country has that, so when you compare us to another country you can't simply ignore that fact. It's bad out there, but we should be world leaders when it comes to our own laws. That is what is disappointing.

My view isn't towards Muslims getting upset over this controversy, I'm upset that some Americans are even getting upset with Muslims.

Okay that's cool. I should apologize then, I missed the point you were trying to make in your first post. You're right on the money with your thought.

WOW! Just wow! That's some racist shit right there.

Islam and Christianity are both based off of the same abrahamic religion, and is the second biggest regligion in the world with 1.3 billion followers around the globe. Should 1bn people just be glad that they can freely practise their religion? Should religions such as buddhism, hinduism and judaism also "just be glad" that the surperior master race of christianity allows them to practise their religion freely?

Dude I'm not trying to be racist, you're missing my point. All I'm saying is Muslims (and other religions) in North America are treated much better than non-Muslim religions (Christianity, Buddhist, etc.) in Muslim countries like Burma, Malaysia, Pakistan, etc. In North America you can freely practice any religion, in Muslim countries you can freely practice Islam and nothing else.

I think you're missing his point. It shouldn't matter how other countries treat their people. That shouldn't be the basis of how we treat ours.

Here  in America we have (or should have) freedom of religion for all. Whether that be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or even those weirdo Scientology people :-p

It's all good. I'm glad we both feel the same way.

No arguement there at all. I 100% agree everyone should be able to practise their religion anywhere they want (even scientology people!). I just hate the fact that Muslim countries can't be the same as here. It seems like kind of a double standard that Muslims (and other minority religions) get treated well here but Christians (and other religions) get treated like shit in Asian Muslim countries. I'm not sure if that's the correct use of the term "double standard" or not but I think you know what I'm trying to say.

Just so you know I'm not against the "ground zero mosque" at all, although I do think it would be a great sign of respect towards America if the Muslims put it a few blocks further (or in a different part of NY) from the WTC site.

I don't understand that logic of 'just a little further away'. There already is a Mosque two blocks further and has been there since the 70's. Does a couple extra blocks really make any difference?

You can't even see the location of the proposed new Mosque from Ground Zero.

I didn't know there was already one there, but that's cool cause its been there for 40 years. Actually come to think of it its been almost 9 years since 9/11 so really it was a long time ago now.

I guess when all's said and done I don't have a problem with it at all. When I first heard the news I was shocked but after thinking about it and reading posts from you guys its not such a big deal.

We do have freedome of religion and all people should respect that and respct all religions.  This controversy shouldn't be a controversy.  having said that i think we do have to understand why some are concerned.

The best way to resolve this?  All religions practiced in the u.s.a. should be treated equally and they should treat others equally.  The only way for this to end, imo, is for this imam to take back what he said about America in the past (simple enough) and call for Muslims to fight against Terrorists.  that should make all oppositions to this go away.

Something like this.
