Forums - Sales Discussion - The great sales divide!

There is a great sales divide. Between the PS3/Wii. No, I am not talking about how many units are sold. I am talking about what people wanna buy.

I think this is why there are so many problems between Wii/PS3 people on this forum. The 360 people know they are the best, they have the best console, and they don't see the point in arguing it. Because they are so much better than anything else. The 360 people buy FPS. And lots of them. That's about it for the 360.

The people who like the Wii are typically people who have never owned a Sony system, or only enjoy the simpler games. Katamari, Ratchet & Clank... the Simple, It don't have to be epic, easy to play, games with a 5-10 minute learning curve. The Wii gamers love the new era of Nintendo software, which is typically composed of doing something really simple, and making it fun. They put that one catch in there, that makes you wanna score higher, score better than last time. So you do it again, and again, and again.

The people who like the PS3 typically like the more advanced games, the games that require thinking, that require skill, ability. Games like God of War, GT, Motorstorm, Final Fantasy, KillZone (if you havent played Killzone: Liberation, dont say how complex the game isnt). The Sony people like games that make you think, that make you use your mind. To sit there with the controller in your lap. "Where do I go next" "What am I gonna do about this?"

It is this major diffrence between the two, that I think causes so much problems. People who have trouble playing complex games... they HATE them. It's like playing a game you cant beat. It's too hard, it's impossible. It's no fun. Or the other way around. It's too easy, I can do this game so easily, I can do so much... This game is nothing... Why am I paying 50$ for this? Games had more complexity than this 8 years ago.

It is this great divide that I think there are so many problems between the Wii/PS3 people.

(I was gonna say what each console is doing to appease the other side, but I don't wanna sound biased in this. I'm trying to hold this actually neutral)

That's about as fair and balanced as Fox News.

"The 360 people buy FPS. And lots of them. That's about it for the 360. " : Exactly the reason i don't buy the 360 and never will.  Just not an FPS person. It gives me vertigo.

I see your point with why people buy wii or PS3, but i do not agree when you say "The people who like the Wii are typically people who have never owned a Sony system, or only enjoy the simpler games."  I love the wii, but I also have PS1 and PS2.  I like God of War and Final Fantasy.  Liking the Wii doesn't mean I don't like complex games.  There's no single type of game available on the Wii which targets a particular group.  With the Wii, there's so many variety of games that it actually attract and appeal all different kinds of people with different interest.  That's where I see Nintendo succeeding.

I think a lot of people do "want" to buy a PS3, but it's also double the price, and that makes a big difference these days.  Wii of course has ease-of-use and consumer friendliness on its side, but I don't think the depressed intetest in the PS3 is just about the console, it's about the price.

You make it sound like Wii players are simple minded people that enjoy doing repetitive tasks. Whereas Sony players are all thinkers that look for complex challenges.

Sorry but, I think you are wrong. Sony's games are not generally more complex than Nintendo's or anyone else's for that matter. The only reason you can think of more complex and better games on Sony is because in the last two gens they had nearly all of the 3rd party games. Your logic is flawed because it has not been a level playing ground. If Sony had not sold 5 times the hardware of its competitors you could not make this arguement at all.

FPS is all 360, this is true, they do have a better online gameplay system thus far. But, by this time next year it might not be that way on either of those counts.

As for complex and large games, those too are moving away from Sony exclusiveness to be on other platforms.

Plus the simple short games are relatively new to this gen. That is what is bringing in the non-gamers. Wii Sports and Play are perfect examples of this, but these do not define all Nintendo has to offer. Metroid was not a 5 minute game. Niether has any Zelda game. There have been a few puzzles in Zelda that I did have to sit back and think about the solution before I could complete it. Like the stone guy jumping puzzle.

Plus I would compare GT and Motorstorm with Wii Sports and Excite Truck before I would compare it to Final Fantasy or God of War. You can't tell me you don't play GT and Motorstorm because it "makes you wanna score higher, score better than last time".

How expansive is God of War / average Final Fantasy? I played Metroid Prime(1) in a little over 24 hours. I have put 36 so far into Zelda: Twilight Princess and am up to the getting the 2nd peice of the mirror. I bet I still have 20hours left. If I include the 5 remaining bugs and 20 remaining poes to collect.

I think you just like Sony because it has had the most games over the last to gens. This time will be different as IF Wii keeps selling like this, all of those games will come to Wii. At least the 3rd party games. Katamari is already going Wii. DQ is no longer in any form on Sony. Final Fantasy will probably make one more appearance on Sony, then jump ship, unless that game saves them. Basically the high quality complex games you state only Sony has are only there due to Sony's massive sales in hardware. Those games will be on any system that sells the best.

People who desire very complex games may already own a PC thats less then 2 years old, this provides them with an decent gaming platform, the PS3 really doesn't offer them anything new. Which is why I haven't bought one. The Wii however offers a new experiance with it's interaction and social gaming. Everyone I know has a Mii on my Wii ;) I once owned a Ps2 and only ever played Fifa on it when a friend came around The rest of the time I would play "Complex" games on my PC I do agree that in theory that the power of the PS3 may give a game potentially better AI, however I think the Wii still can do decent AI with it's present CPU. A normal DVD has plenty of space for a very complex game, the extra BluRay space used by the PS3 will mostly be for it's HD features. At the moment the Wii is not offering very complex games (eg RTS) but that does not mean it never will.

"..just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake"

yeah, for my wii, i have no intent on playing complex games.

there are certains games i'd like to play, like civ, that i only play on the computer and will probably never play on a console.

that's why i bought the wii, since it's got something new.  that's why i bought the playstation--for one game, DDR.  and yes, it's PS1, for 40 bucks a few years back.  i borrowed a friend's PS2 for katamari.

and yeah, i can imagine a lot of games where i'll just skip because of a learning curve.  there are SO many games, why should i pick one i need to spend time just to have fun?

the Wii is an epidemic.
