Forums - Sony Discussion - Why is Sony going to be number 1 next gen?

I assume you are talking about sales?

I hope it isnt actually. With the emergence of Casual gamers, for Sony to be in 1st place next gen they will have to produce a console without any passion or spirit to what currently makes them SOny.

Whether or not it is true at all times, Sony products have always been first produced with the idea that they were on the cutting edge of technology.

This is Sony, this is how consumers recognize the company, and Sony wants it this way.

They just need to find a way to blend the 2 concepts of being the best, (which I would argue they currently are) with selling the most.

This means they just need to try and keep the cost down while remaining on the technological edge (this doesnt just mean graphics) and this will not be easy.

Im sure they have a plan in place already, but will not launch at $600 like last time, but wait until the tech is more reasonable for the consumer.

Sony learned a big lesson this gen and will know doubt be on top of there game next gen. at launch they will have new IP'S and established IP'S available, and possibly the largest lineup of launch and launch window games of any console manufacture of any gen be for?

i agree

I hope you're talking about #1 in quality, not just cheap sales to raise profit.

Realistically, I don’t think they can be unless Nintendo becomes arrogant and screws up. If you look at the modern videogame industry (NES and newer) there have been 5 console generations and 3 handheld generations and the market leading console manufacturer has only switched place twice. In both cases that the market leading console manufacturer was replaced several very large mistakes were made by the previous console manufacturer that opened up the opportunity for them to be replaced; in the case of the N64 it was Nintendo alienating third party publishers and giving the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation an 18 month head start to establish themselves in the market, and in the case of the PS3 it was Sony alienating the broader gamer market and releasing the PS3 at the ridiculous price of $600.

If Nintendo releases a console in the $200 to $300 range (possibly up to $400), 5 or 6 years after the Wii launched, with decent third party support it would be very difficult for Sony to pass them; if Sony responds to a system like that by releasing a console 12 to 18 months after Nintendo and/or releasing their new console at a price over $400 I would expect the PS4 to have lower sales than the PS3.

I remember laughing at the Xbox 1 faithful last generation for saying stuff like this.

Tease.

Sony's model was built on a huge cache of third party exclusives. As long as Microsoft offers a device with similar specs and a similarly low first party market share, Sony will never build up a huge cache of third party exclusives. Whether Sony rebounds from PS3 levels (65m-85m) to PS1 levels will essentially depend on how expensive it is to make games for the publishers and how well the next Nintendo system sells, as even with 50% market share for Nintendo Wii supported far more third party games / exclusives profitably until at least 2009 than PS3 or X360 did (and probably through at least 2010).

Because it will be the first Console to be able to diplay games in 4K widescreen (4096x2160) resolution!

All of this at 60 fps and 3D (with glasses). :P

Seriously, who knows.  But one thing is sure, it will be an exciting time when they finally release the specs and features at some upcoming E3.

it may support glassless 3d on certain models... assure u 1080px 60fps/30fps will be standard.

only games from naughty dog , polyphony , santa monica will archive such things

I would say that’s a short-term memory plaudit.  This is the first generation that a Sony console can lay stake to that claim.  Did you have the same passion for Microsoft with the Xbox last generation, or Nintendo with the N64 the generation before that?

Their previous success has nothing to do with an “idea of being on the cutting edge of technology.” They achieved the dominant marketshare and reaped the rewards of third-party exclusivity.
