Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony Overships Ps3 by ALOT

Of course the PS3 shipment figures would  upset many fanboys...

But the signs were pretty clear the quarter before the latest report. VGChartz simply undertracked the PS3 (back then and by the end the previous quarter). There was overwhelming evidence that at the end of the quarter ending March 2010 the PS3 was in short supply that quarter in major regions such as North America and Europe, this while retail got overloaded with cheap XBox 360 arcade units.

Now PS3 stock levels have normalized last quarter as anticipated (contributing to the spike of retail sales). I dedicated a few threads to this topic here on VGChartz regarding the topic, so if you are a regular the big shipment figures for the previous quarter shouldn't come as a surprise. This sales spike was anticipated.

I am more surprised by the fact the PS2 again beats XBox 360 shipments figures like it did the quarter before!

No it's not, Sony lies with their numbers!!!! that's the only acceptable excuse! =)

The signs are overwhelming. Just look at the fact that the PS3 sold well more games at retail compared the XBox 360 last fiscal year despite the hardware sales headstart/gap (almost 4.5 million to the advantage of the XBox 360) at the time.

Although the average PS3 owner still seems to be buying quite a bit more games than the average XBox 360 owner the hardware undertracking here on VGChartz misrepresents the extend. These discrepencies makes the PS3 hardware sales look worse than reality while making the software sales look better than reality in term of current attach ratios compared the XBox 360.

Anyway software shipments increased from 14.8 million PS3 software sales last year to retail to a whopping 24.8 million last quarter! That's really good for this relatively quiet sales period.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Maybe on a more positive note for XBox 360 fans here on VGChartz is that it is also anticipated the XBox 360 will see a sales spike for this current quarter. This mainly due to retailers clearing stock of older XBox 360 models with sub 100 dollar deals.

So I think for the next report it will be the last time Microsoft will blow its trumpets and dedicate the spike entirely to the new model which IMO looks quite a bit like a PS3 wannabe (black shiny casing with touch sensitive buttons and added some features which came with PS3s since launch).

But the holiday season I think will be most revealing, I think unless Microsoft introduces further price drops sales will plummet hard. Kinect may perform OK for North America, UK and Australia though due to mainly the massive overhype it received during the fake Milio presentation (and thus fans hailing it as the second coming of christ, which naturally should push some fans towards buying Kinect regardless of quality). For the rest of the world however, such as Europe and Japan I anticipate a massive sales failure. Everything Microsoft has shown (real demonstrations of software) have been very underwhelming and according to Microsoft (probably due to its entry pricing) is mostly geared at the hardcore initially, this while the bulk of the hardcore gaming community seems appalled with what was shown to them so far.

My guess is that the PS3 will indeed overtake the XBox 360 install base this Sony fiscal year and the year thereafter the PS3 will again gain huge momentum while the 350's momentum will plummet. I guess Microsoft is already planning a new XBox as they probably understand they will loose all their PR propaganda war ammunition next year like was the case for HD DVD (when the propaganda tactics moved towards the non-existant digitial download vs Blu-Ray HD movie format war, cheap movie distribution with a quality no where near to Blu-Ray quality).

I am not all that worried about bans, despite I do try my best to behave fairly but always take a stance against people trying to kill freedom of speech. I am aware of past bias (all the mods here seem to be vivid supporters of various products, so that naturally inhibits objectivity and sometimes cry 'trolling'), for example I got banned for saying the Wii is powered similar to a last gen specced console or that the XBox 360 was extremely failure prone in the past.

I think deep down most people now understand such statements to be true and my expressed opinions aren't all that controversial neither. It's just like for example Microsoft persisted on "well within industry standards failures" and some mods at the time  took a stance to support the vivid 360 fan perspective despite all the evidence which was available at the time and so look at the issue of someone afterwards highlighting this fact when proven to be correct from a non-objective perspective.

People were also upset with my technical analysis of the PS3 being technically far more powerful than a XBox 360 despite some lacklustre launch titles (compared to 2nd year 360 games like Gears of War, not its launch titles) and porting issues between the two architectures (in part due to Microsoft promoting inefficient/worse portable coding techniques). But today with people seeing games like Motorstorm Apocalyse or Killzone 3 demonstrated on a 3D LED HDTV the bulk of such people are without doubts.

Something insisted on being a controversial statement today may tomorrow be considered plain common sense. Like claiming Iraq did not really have huge amount of weapons of mass destruction back in the day by experts.

I think one thing is absolutely true despite what actions of moderators here might suggest, the PS3 is the most trolled against games console this generation (especially with massive misinformation, but also in part due to Microsoft with the fake technical analysises in the past suggesting the 360 was far far more powerful than a PS3 or that they unlike Sony provide better HD movie support choices, despite reality is reversed).
