Forums - Sales Discussion - No more 20GB PS3?

Well, don't hit post twice by accident.  I'll make the most of it and add that the lack of a 20gig model in Europe would indicate that it's dead.  I imagine most of Sony's second production run went to Europe so if they still made an 80/20 split the US and Japan would have been flooded with 20gig models over the last few months.

Here's my theory that is pretty much based on nothing. The 20gb model seemed to disappear around February. The Euro launch was in March. They probably started production of the Euro model (which doesn't have the PS2 chip) in February. I think Sony halted production of the 20gb in order to manufacture 60gb US/Japan models and 60gb Euro models. If they had continued to make the 20gb alongside the other two models it would've probably been too expensive and complicated to deal with 3 models. I think that as soon as the US and Japan gets the Euro model (therefore eliminating one model line), we'll see the lower end SKU back for sale everywhere. This would explain why there has been no announcement stating that the lower model is dead because it'll be back soon.

Again, this is all just my theory.

The wholesale cost between a 20gb drive and a 60gb is very small, maybe $10 tops.  Yet the price difference in consoles is $100. That's a pretty big pill for Sony to swallow. They would have to sell a lot of games to make up the difference. I don't believe the decision was made on inventory, but revenue. It's almost impossible for them to make money with a $499 PS3 at this time.

Sony has lost its mind. Can't wait to see a price tag on an 80g ps3.

I don't think this will help them at all. 120g 360 must sound better to most people who seem to think graphics are all that matters.

hard drive size has nothing to do with graphics, unless you are saying that to distinguish the 360 and ps3 from the wii, which is also not all about grahics but whatever.  Anyway, Sony is stupid not to continue to sell the 20GB version considering it is the about the same price as a 360 premium with live for 2 years and has the same functionality plus a blu-ray player and slightly more hd space (360 uses more of the 20GB).

I do not think they will release an 80GB PS3, though.

What I meant was for people who like grahpics over gameplay, the elite will be a better deal then the 80 gig ps3. I know hard drives have sh*t to do with graphics.

I am Daemon. I am the Word.

i was really looking forward to the first $150 price drop on the 20 gig version which makes it 349.99. too bad they stopped making it.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

The 20gb also didn't have a WiFi antenna or flash memory slots. Throw in the fact the production is going to get more simple in the next couple of months, I bet a $500 model will be back soon.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

I think that sony mainly made the 20 gig model just to say the ps3 was 500$, and now making it nearly impossible to get. However, that doesn't mean that it won't come back in the future when Sony can better afford to do it.
