Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gaming moments that should have outraged the press........but didn't.

The inspiration for this thread comes from the fine folks at my third home, Gamesradar (VGChartz is my second home.  My home is my first home....).  Their sense of humor keeps me coming back again and again!  Here's the link: http://www.gamesradar.com/f/games-that-should-be-more-controversial-than-gta/a-20100723164755785093

And with that out of the way......Remember the days when Mortal Kombat was garnering headlines for its ultra-violent realism or when Grand Theft Auto was causing civilization's downfall?  It was strange that these games were getting such press when there was worse things out there.  Here's a few that I could think of.  Can you think of any more?

1.  Leisure Suit Larry:  Magna Cum Laude:  This game features a full on sex scene with flopping boobs and a guy in a carrot costume.  It had full frontal nudity, too!  There was even a chick with a, uh,.....stick!  Nobody even gave it a second look.

2.  BMX XXX and The Guy Game:  Screw the pixelated women!  These two games featured video footage of real boobs!!  Of course, it was nothing worse than any R-Rated movie in the 80's but at the time, game boobies were taboo.  Why didn't CNN run a story on these games?

3.  Kung Fu (Nes):  In the early 90's, Nintendo garnered praise for censoring violence in games like Mortal Kombat.  Good for them.  Nintendo was there to protect our children from seeing Sub-Zero punching somebody's head off!  But wait.  I played Kung Fu in the 80's.  This game, created by Nintendo, featured a scene where you kicked an old man's head off!!  WTF, Nintendo?

4.  Resident Evil 2 (PS1):  There's a part where you end up playing as a spunky little 12-year old named Sherry Birkin.  For whatever reason (I can't remember), Sherry has to run through a room infested with zombie dogs.  The dogs are pretty retarded and if one bites you, you should quit playing video games and start playing Candyland.  But, if you are sadistic enough to let the dogs kill Sherry, you're treated to a scene of a little girl getting eaten alive by dogs.  Nobody thought this was innapproriate?

That's all I have right now.  If I can think of any more, I'll add 'em.  So what'cha got?

People would have had to play Leisure Suit Larry, BMX XXX, or The Guy Game to actually get outraged by those...

MGS4.....Akiba...oh my god.....it HURTS...

Thanks for linking to gamesradar, never been on that site before but I like it :)

nintendo and sega fan since i was old enough to hold a game controller.

note: my games collection on my profile is only 20ish% complete, i've got a boatload of 360,saturn and dreamcast games to add and a few ps3 games, thanks :)

Also, funny little gaming history note about BMX XXX and how it helped the gaming industry.

It came onto the scene hoping to ride on controversy like GTAIII did.  Up until BMX XXX, many people thought that if your game was controversial, it would sell regardless of quality.  BMX XXX came about because they wanted to make a controversial game that they absolutely knew would sell well.  So they made a terrible BMX game, put a very small amount of topless girls in it (that I think was some unlockable and barely there), and the game did terrible.

BMX XXX did a great thing for the industry by proving controversy doesn't sell.

I bought that game, Resident Evil Zero, and Metroid Prime on the same day.  I figured that the two good games would help me avoid embarrassment at Gamestop.  I was wrong.  :(

The House of the Dead Overkil;it landed in it's own little spot in the Guiness of World Records for the most profanity in a videogame. Nobody ever said anything bad about it.

Another one was Madworld;sure it spawned controversy, but it wasn't as big as GTA III

I didnt hear any complaints by former attorney Jack Thompson because if these games.

That's a damn good one.  And the ending of that game--HOLY SHIT!

funny to think that these games escaped the controversy but Mass Effect had a small 'sex' scene and it was blasted.

I get the distinct feeling a game has to be well received by either critics or the public for the mainstream press to care. As soon as a game attains a level of success then even a minor amount of tasteful sex or violence and its

"OMG! SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN! BAN THESE RAPE SIMULATORS!"
