Yup including videogames, good news for Sony

Nikkei reports today that Sony will be posting an operating profit of between 10 billion and 30 billion yen over the April through June quarter. The company posted a 25.7 billion yen loss in the same period the year before.

As contributors to the turnaround, the site lists strong sales of product in China, strong performance of new SLR camera models, and strong performance both domestic and abroad for LCD televisions.

It looks like video games contributed as well. Nikkei states that Sony's games and mobile division reached profitability for the quarter thanks to cost-cutting measures.

I really hope Microsoft doesn't do a price cut anytime soon and slaughter Sony.  They really need to be able to sit and profit for a while.

Umm..Microsoft's price cut wouldn't effect to Sony at all (well Ps3 maybe 5-10k hw)..It would just boost Xbox 360.

I think they effect each other more than any other console in the past. They are direct alternatives to each other.

I assume that was directed at me?  I am a user of all three current generation consoles actually.

It is naive to think that the Xbox 360 has no effect on the PS3 and vica versa.  The more sales one has proportionate to the other, the easier it is for that console to secure exclusives in the future, something that is especially critical with their new motion controls.

I do see them eating ito each others sales somewhat cuz of the similarity between them but no where in hell is it effecting ps3 that badly...if it was NPD would have looked very differently and so would have the SW sales

Metacritics has

24 ps3 game scored over 90 to date.

29 360 games over 90 to date.

I suppose cost cutting is the recent die shrink for the PS3 that allowed SONY to profit on hardware.
