Forums - Sony Discussion - Atlus plans to support Demons Soul's servers till March 2011

Looks like if I plan to Platinum this game. I better do it soon.

I think Atlus is trying to make EU people get this game as soon as possible :p

Namco controls the EU servers.  And given the state they're in, they may drop the servers faster than Atlus.  :P

I'm actually a little upset they are dropping support of this game next year. I think this thread is kinda spinning this into a positive, but to me, it's devestating. I love that game, in 1 year, I can't play it online? bullshit. Play this game NOW before it's ruined.

I have never ever seen somebody twist things as frequently as you do... Considering the fact that I have not beaten demons souls yet, I am also not happy. This thread is definitely a warning.

it suppost P2P. though service probably going to get a bit worse depending on the connection

Hmmmm...why doesn't PSN just pick up coverage of the game?

?

This has nothing to do with PSN itself.  Either a game allows online play via dedicated servers hosted by the publisher/studio, as is the case with Demon's Souls, or it uses a peer to peer connection, using a player's console as a host in lieu of a server.  PSN only comes into play when storing the game's trophy information, which is something inherent to each PSN member, not the game, and thus wouldn't disappear with Atlus' abandonment of its servers.

It's a common misconception that services like PSN/XBL are used as a base for online play.  In reality they are merely gateways that let ps3s/360s talk directly to each other.  The task of providing online play is on the shoulders of the makers of the game, who either provide servers (which cost money), or set up a P2P network (which doesn't cost a dime once in place and theoretically lasts forever).  The only things that cost Sony/MS money are the storage and retrieval of a member's information, like trophies/achievements, friends lists, games you've bought, etc., plus the perpetual network that let's people access this information at any given time.

oh well looks like I should go buy the EU version then

So how would P2P work in a game like Demon's Souls? Where everyone is interacting with everyone and no one at the same time.

well i bought mine a couple of weeks ago and i still didnt start it, it being too hard frightens me, i only play it with a friend

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

It's a bit sad that Atlus is dropping the online support sooner than most expected, March 2011 is less than a year from now.

But there's a slight misconception in this thread, regarding the events in the World Tendencies. All the world tendency and character tendency events are very doable offline, that's how I got my platinum.

It requires a much tighter progression pattern right from the moment you kill the Phalanx, that's true, and it also requires that you play the entire game in Soul Mode, in order to achieve Pure White WT and then spend a large amount of Stone of Ephemeral Eyes, while constantly dying in Physical form in any world you want to drop from Pure White WT to Pure Black WT.

Plus, since in order to achieve Platinum, you have to do at least 4 different playthroughs, missing an event in one of the playthroughs isn't that worrying (but I would at least recommend to do all the Pure Black WT events on the first playthrough, as starting from New Game , the difficulty has that huge increase spike).
