Forums - Sony Discussion - New Sony laser technology 20 times better than Blu-Ray

to those that laugh at blu ray already being more than enough i have two words: glassesless 3D.

In development is an extension of the MVC extension called MVD (Multiview Video Depth), also called 3DV. MVD adds extra data for additional "depth" layers and multiple views (probably more than a dozen) to create a multi-level stereoscopic image that you won't need glasses to view.

To decode, generate and view these multiple "views," however, requires a lot more signal processing power, resolution and new methods of display than available using current plasma and LCD 3D technology. First, you need ultra HD 4K, capable of displaying around 8 million pixels; current HDs display around 2 million pixels. At CES, Panasonic hung an astounding six-foot-wide 4K plasma, pictured, which also was used inside its 3D demo room.

That's almost as powerful as a Light Saber!

LOL! that would be awesome- free lightsaber with the ps4! What I don't understand is why would sony create this even though blu-ray hasn't become mainstream yet?!

I really hope Sony isn't stupid enough to use this on the next Playstation, creating another $600 system.... PS3 didn't even really need Blu-Ray.

O_O!!! with that much space, and the sheer amount of power the PS4 will have, and the next line of T.V.'s Sony will introduce will mean:

SONY IS GOING FOR 4D!!!  bolt down your couch and strap yourselves in!!! lol

As long as they make this new laser blue.. the life of Blu Ray can, and will continue.

How about we use flash? It can ahve much more storage and it is many many times faster than optical media.

is also more expensive, Disc are a part of plastic, flash require more complex fabriction

Sony will definitely wait til the PS5 to come out with this tech.  The PS4 will most likely just have a 4x-6x Blu-ray drive to help keep costs down.  I would imagine the PS4 to be ~ $400.  Plus, Blu-ray is still working its way up to being the norm.  A new tech so soon would most likely just hurt sales of the new tech, which would make the PS4 (if it contained the new disc tech) an oddity.

Still, it's nice to have it now, yes?

Also, tell that to Hideo Kojima and MGS4.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

Some of the best games on the original PLaystation where multi-disc, including Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo and FF7 to name a few.

Besides they could have opted for double sided DVD's, wich would have been faster to since the PS3 only uses a 2x Blu- Ray player. For comparison, 2x Blu-Ray is about equal in speed as a 8x dvd(that's right, 360's 12x dvd player can actually data faster than PS3's Blu-Ray player). And offcourse it would have saved Sony about $150 per PS3 from the start.

ps4 tech confirmed hehe. they did it with the ps3 why not the ps4 sell it for 800 for all i care. sony has and will forever ruin gaming. i mean just think about it they have copied everything that nintendo has created and even used actual snes hardware to make the original psone. ps2 was a dvd player to 50% of families. sony now has blue ray which if you think about it blue ray discs still are not selling well compared to normal dvd's the reason is cause blue ray players upgrade a dvd to HD. so why pay 25 dollars for the same movie you can buy for 15?  i think the players are great but like most tv stations and cable and satalite stations they still are not more HD then regular. the question for the next gen systems are gonna be whos different enough to catch people's eye and whos cheapest i think. people can say all they want about how nintendo sucks but without nintendo the gaming industry would be dead.
