You want to know what's better than the sound of getting achievements?

The sound of getting trophies

Im not sure who popularize achievement/trophies/medal, but flash games and websites like kongregate had those for years.

its been confirmed today that GT5 has a weather system, track editor and go karts! seriously i think this is going to be the best selling in the series even beating GT3 sales of 14 million plus!

Achievements are just trophies for everybody, cause this day and age no one is a loser and they have to make gamers feel good, even if they suck.  Hey, you might be at the bottom of the scoreboard with 2 kills and 56 deaths, but at least you get an achievement.

Unfortunately, things aren't like the old days where people were good because they played longer, faster, or just plain better.  People used to respect l337ness because those games didn't reward you with distractions like new guns, clothes, or other trivialities.  You had everything you needed to get good at the beginning, and the only thing that set you apart was how good you were and maybe your ping to the server - no excuses.

Too bad the kids of today are going to learn the hard way that the world doesn't work like that.  It takes hard work to actually get somewhere, and no one is going to coddle them forever.

So no one is impressed with the complex work behind the achievements?

Does the process make sense to anyone?

I'm thinking that it took a while for Sony's Trophies to appear cause it took a long time to figure it out.

what does PS3's trophies sound like?  Never heard it - don't have PS3

Do be aware, though, that when we say "highly technical," we mean it: "Since the launch of Xbox 360, game information has been defined using a Game Development Kit (GDK) tool called XLAST, the Xbox LIVE Authoring and Submission Tool. XLAST writes the game information to an XML file called an XLAST file," Curley explains, and that's just the beginning of a lengthy explanation that involves flow-charts and chunks of actual code used for examples.

It took a while for Sony trophies to show up because a lot of games were half way through development when Sony decide to add them in. These games have deadlines so I can see why some  developers will not take the time to go back to add in trophies. It's the same with motion controls. It's better, like  the Wii, to have motion controls from the beginning  than to add them on later like Sony and Mircosoft.

I just reached the 10,000 achievement points mark and couple of weeks ago =)
