I am one of the few people on these boards that still owns Eternal Darkness, unfortunately I haven't played either Mass Effect. Claiming God of War's voicework is stellar is like saying the guy who played Leonidus should have won an oscar... again its an excellent film, poorly acted. Eternal Darkness voicework is shoddy for quite a few of the characters. Pious comes easily to mind. I was planning to buy Mass Effect 2 shortly since i got by uber PC, SO I shall reserve judgement. I still doubt it to be in the same league as Toy Story 3. But i'll go in with a positive mindset.

I said God of War was good for what it was, not htat it was stellar. You can have good acting in a ridiculous space. By the same token, the acting in Gears of War is quite good.

Eternal Darkness's voice work is a lot better than you're giving it credit for. Paulsen's job as Pious Augustus was fantastic.

Don't ignore KotOR2. It's still probably the best-acted and best-written script in te medium. But Mass Effect 2 is lent a certain gravitas by one of the main characters being played by Martin Sheen. Still, don't skip the first, even if the voicework isn't as good.

I ignored KotOr2 because aside from seeing fantastic reviews on the web and a few gameplay videos here and there I have no experience with it... It is not something i've had the pleasure of experiencing so I cannot talk about it.

But maybe we have come to a point where we are seeing voice acting as an opinionated space. You thought Pious' voice was good, I thought it was frankly the worst voice work in Eternal Darkness...

However - I am excited for Other M. Very, I like the simplicity afforded by the control scheme, and I (must be one of the few) always really wanted to know more about her, besides all the 100% completions of lore in the Prime Trilogy, the exposition in Fusion and the Manga. She is, after all, my favorite heroine in the videogame space - and I am glad her personality isn't a kick ass now take names later...

In the interest of being on-topic, I have to agree that Other M is going to be great.

I'm excited about this game, I don't have a lot of Metroid experience, certainly not compared to Nintendo's other big franchises. I wasn't able to get into Prime on GC, but did eventually play and complete Corruption. I also have the trilogy and got about half way through Prime 1 this time. I also downloaded Super Metroid on VC, and was really enjoying it until I got stuck and couldn't figure out what to do even with a guide and gave up. But this game seems very fun to me, seems like it will have the exploration the series is known for, but make the action a little faster paced. I think the voice acting is fine, not stellar but doesn't seem to detract, and once you've played it awhile I'm sure we'll get more used to it. I like the direction of having Samus have a more monotone voice, and being emotionally and socially stunted, but I would have liked her voice to sound slightly stronger, but that is just a minor complaint.

Anyway this is a great thread, and I can't wait for the game to be released.

There is one point in Super Metroid where i got stuck and couldn't interpret guides either. I would recommend looking at a world map online, as it visibly explains things better than the guides can describe it.

Samus' monologue reminds me very much of the elevator rides in Fusion. Which were a refreshing change of pace in my opinion. The dialogues on the other hand should stay more limited and complement the monologue's setting in my opinion, don't make them too complex. So far I don't see anything that compromises that latter ideal of mine. It is relevant  with what Samus notes. Also the tone of the voice actress is the best it can be to fit her character in my opinion. Too much emotion would ruin it for me, and probably even distance me from the series. With every week leading to its release my excitement for this game accumulates. I need it. :)

I don't buy this excuse that she isn't distant from people or whatever justifying that monotone VA.  Even someone alone without contact with anyone has emotion.

Monotonous inner monologues are a staple, especially in anime, but they can be widely found in Western works as well.

Even for someone who is perhaps more outgoing than Samus, such monologues would not necessarily be out of place (you get sober, monotone reflections from characters as hotheaded as Naruto, for instance)

I'll disagree, but that's a matter of opinion. I'm just trying to provide a rationale for why she would sound so emotionless. It's a localization thing.

Can't wait for this game, just played for the first time the original Metroid on virtual console (thanks to my Secret Santa of 2 years ago :p )

I was really surprised, for a Nes games it had a lot of cool things and the music is fantastic, really creepy in some parts like Kraid's Hideout. The only bad thing is the repetitive rooms which confused me a lot where to go, understandable for the Nes limitations.

I wonder if Ridley is still in the game.

They never bothered explaining how he and Kraid came back in Super Metroid (though they never explained how Mother Brain came back either). I hope they do in this case.
