Forums - Nintendo Discussion - My Wii randomly freezes, need help.

i don't don't whats up with your wii, derixs. reformatting the wii is basically resetting the system back to it's factory settings, so it should fix any software related issue. maybe it's some kind of hardware problem with your wii. maybe the flash memory is dieing or something, i have no idea.

for boneark, the mii channel thing does sound like corrupted memory to me. about reformatting, you can get a sd card and save all of the save data it will let you save (some games don't let you copy thier save data, though, so sorry). if you have any mii's you care about, move them onto your wiimotes (you can store 10 in each wiimote). i think that is everything you can move off to save. reformatting will basically wipe the entire flash memory on the wii clean, and reset the system back to it's factory settings. all of the channels (wii channels, wiiware or vc games) will be deleted. don't bother moving them to an sd card, because your wii will no longer take them. don't worry though, because it will remember what games you bought off the shop channel, and let you redownload all of them for free.

i thinks thats everything you need to know. i had to reformat my system a little over a year ago. it was a bitch, but i got over it.

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=76669&page=1

you can view a few screenshots from the game in my photo album here; http://www.vgchartz.com/photos/album.php?album=2312

I do have some Miis on my Mii channel from other people, can that be a reason why my Wii is having issues? I don't think I want to reformat my Wii b/c I have a lot of data, MH3 and Brawl especially. I'm going to buy the cleaning kit and see if that works. Thanks for the info.

Not to rehash things you may have tried already, but make sure to remove ANY Gamecube memory cards, controllers, SD cards, USB devices, or 3rd party anything. Back-up and do a reset. If the problem doesn't present itself right away at start-up do a fan cleaning, though it sounds like that isn't your issues. Before reset, remove the power plug for 1 minute at minimum as well. If none of that works, and you have an up to date system you have 3 choices, suck it up until an update drops and see if that fixes it with a fresh OS (fairly unlikely after trying a reset), send it in and pay (ughh!), or do a system downgrade and re-upgrade (a softmod) because it's likey a cIOS issue- HOWEVER this could perma-brick the Wii if you aren't carefull. That means dead dead dead.

Frankly if none of the easy choices work I'd send it in before trying the mod, unless you are sure you can preform it safely. Even then downgrading and re-upgrading the system files is one of the more dangerious thing you can do. A word of advice if you go that route. USE a battery backup. A power failure midupgrade (or mod) is the easiest way to get a nice white $200 paperweight.

The first step I would do is to make sure everything sounds good. Does the drive have any (new) weird noises? Are the fans spinning without obstruction(look with flashlight)? Do all games run into a problems or just select ones ?(BTW SSMB, Metroid Trilogy, and Monster Hunter 3 are the most common troublemakers- the first 2 are DL discs which the Wii struggles with and MH3 often causes overheating) Try an undemanding title like a 2D WiiWare, Virtual Console, or simple disc game (Geometry Wars is a great choice if you own it). If you do run into consistent crashes, how long does it take? Is it consistent in the time it takes? I hope this helps at least a bit.

Best of luck gents.

My Wii doesn't make any weird sounds. The fans only spin when my Wii is on, I just check. The only one that gives me problems is MH3, it freezes when I play offline during loading, but, when I'm online I have no issues. When I turn on my Wii and press "a" to go to the Wii menu, sometimes a message pops up regarding my Mii channel data. I erased all the Miis that I did not make from my Mii channel, I also have over 2400 Miis on my Mii parade, can that be a possibility why my Wii freezes?  When I'm on the Wii menu and press "a" to go to a channel my Wii freezes, this happens 2-4 times and than my Wii will work after that.

I hope this helps, I hope u can help me get my Wii going normal again.

BTW: I'm not going to reset my Wii, I have too much saved data and most of it I can't moved to a SD card. I'm not going to mod my Wii also, I don't want to risk damaging it. I'll have to wait until the next update, unless I can get it fixed.

To be honest I would try swapping the disc. I'm sure Capcom will let you send it in for a replacement if you contact them. If the only title you have ever had trouble with is MH3 it is very likely you got a messed up disc. It is rare, but not unheard of to have a few duds in a major disc pressing. I got a flubbed copy of NiGHTS that I had to have swapped a few years back. That said it never hurts to blow a little compressed air into the back of the Wii and clear out any dust bunnies. Though it doesn't sound like overheating is the problem. You could also use a CD or DVD cleaning kit, though I'm not sure if the Wii will play them if they arn't specifically for it. Contact Capcom to get a replacement disc for sure though.

Best of luck!

I erased all the Miis from my Mii channel that I did not create and I had no problems on Monday. Today it froze once, I turned it back on and put MH3 the game froze 3 times during loading. Now I'm thinking that it could be dust or u might be right, that my disc is messed up.

You could try going into maintenence mode:

Hold down Plus and Minus then hit the A button when booting up the system.

Ill try maintenance mode. My Wii now freezes on boot up, thats if it turns on at all...

Albion - Its Fun as Ballz !!!!!

When it freezes at start-up, is there a disc in the Wii, i.e. is the MH game still in the Wii?

If so, its probably all related to a dirty Wii. :)

If you notice when you turn on your Wii it reads the disc loaded so it knows what's there. If it were too dirty to accomplish this it could freeze just as it would during a game that is being actively played.

I'd try the cleaning kit as its easy and inexpensive.
